Fire destroys Alfred Hotel at Afton in major blaze
Special correspondence reports a Monday fire at the Alfred Hotel in Afton that completely destroyed the structure and damaged the adjacent new store. Origin unclear, suspected defective flue or carelessness. Fire brigades fought two water streams but headway was too great. Occupants escaped with only the clothes on their backs as wind aided spread. The hotel owner Representative and Mrs. Nelson C Allred face a loss estimated at $5,000 not counting $2,000 insurance. A relief subscription of about $500 formed on the scene. Town officials note the water works system installed recently helped avert broader damage.
