Big Increase in Output of Local Coal Mines

A 1916 state auditor report details regional coal production and rising valuations. Kemmerer Coal Co and J A Quealy Coal Co led with 726 429 tons, Diamond Coal & Coke 638 471, Cumberland 384 607, Lincoln Kemmerer 2896 tons. Total output 1 752 sea tons, up over 20 percent from 1914. Unsensed Lincoln County valuation to exceed 16 million. sheep and cattle tax hikes add about 222 000 and 200 000 respectively.

Lyman Mining Firm Refuses $100,000 Offer

Lyman, Wye March 23 Word was received last night that the Copper Belt Mining company, formed to develop mines found months ago by C A Terry Sr and Mr Elder of Manilla, refused a $100 000 offer by Salt Jake. Directors report strong stock sales and plan to start a work force at once with tools and provisions at Carter ready to haul to the mine near Linwood CA. Terry Dr of this city promotes the enterprise and serves as secretary. He arrived home from Salt Lake tonight.

Green River Mercantile Fire Devastates Quarter Block

A spectator recounts the Green River fire that began in the basement of the Green River Mercantile Company and burned a quarter of a business block from Sunday evening into Monday. The blaze, aided by a stiff wind, endangered the State Bank of Green River and the nearby Sweetwater Brewing Co. site as Rock Springs firefighters aided Green River crews. Damages exceed 100000 with the Mercantile stock valued at about 10000, origin in the basement furnace, and creep of flames threatening multiple structures.

Lucky Escape On Icy Cumberland Branch Engine

A switch engine on the Cumberland branch near Moyer Junction slid off an icy track Friday, rolled over on its side, and was righted after four helper engines. Engineer Parlow and Fireman Strife, Fred Hamerick, and Pat Glasgow fled, with Parlow remaining aboard to salvage the locomotive. All escaped serious injury.

O L Plans Training Trip For 100 Employees At Fort Douglas

A message received by Kemmerer agent Stanley Brammer states that the O L will tow 100 employees to attend Fort Douglas military training school in Utah from August 8 to September. The move is said to be on full pay and several key employees may take advantage of the opportunity.

Guards Ordered to Report for Duty in Cheyenne

Wyoming National Guard members recently back from the Mexican border were notified by wire yesterday afternoon to report at Cheyenne under presidential orders for guard duty. About ten individuals were affected by the orders.

Blackleg Curbed by James Davison in Waters fall region

James Davison, longtime local farmer near Waters fall, reports blackleg among cattle. He lost about 40 head in recent weeks but says the epidemic is now under control and no further losses are expected. He recalls a harsh winter comparable to 17 years ago, when cattle perished near the tunnel west of Kemmerer.

Exciting Case in Star Valley

County Attorney R R Rose traveled to Star Valley last week to oversee an assault case. Defendant S V Boles and plaintiff Joe Henderson were involved after a quarrel near Afton. Holes drew a knife on Henderson. Jury found the defendant guilty. Sentenced by Justice Thomas N Wilde to pay a $50 fine plus costs.
