Details of Martinique horror and Roddam ordeal reach New York
The Bana from Montevideo and St Lucia arrived in New York with a vivid account of Mont Pelee’s eruption. Captain Freeman of the Roddam survived after facing a tidal wave, lava, and a ship aflame, while others perished. The voyage to St Lucia gave a dramatic view of Morne Garou and the lava cloud, and survivors described a world turned dark and deadly by volcanic ash.
