Rail lines cut sheep movement rates to aid winter range

Oscar Peterson of the Lincoln County Wool Growers Association says the Union Pacific and Short Line have set special rates to move sheep to Cokeville and nearby lambing grounds. Effective February 1 through May, rates fall about 60 percent from Bitter Creek to Cokeville and from Rock Springs and Green River to Cokeville. Poor weather may hinder reaching lambing grounds, but the reduced cost should help move bands. Quealy-Paterson has shipped 21 culls to Cokeville, with three more bands to follow.

The feature of the wool situation is continued price strength across markets and active demand worldwide. In the U S demand is hindered by higher prices, with West dealers pausing operations while growers seek better contract terms for new shearings.
