Fatal Cumberland shooting ends in three wounded and death

A quarrel among three Greeks at Cumberland mine area Sunday escalated to a fatal gunfight. Speros, Gavrilos, and Hatze exchanged blows and shots. Gavrilos died at the Miners Hospital Monday morning. Hatze survived and is hospitalized. Speros faces murder charges as preliminary hearings loom.

Walerick Makes Long Walk After Car Lights Fail

Frank Malerick Kemmerer tailor and C A Ives with families left Kemmerer for two or three days fishing on Upper Hamfork. A broken wire and one match left them stranded. Malerick walked to the county bridge at night then back to the car and repaired the line at daybreak. He reached Kemmerer Monday morning with a large catch and noted the value of matches on trips.

Registration Coming for Men Aged Between 18 and 49

Word from Washington says the act of Congress to register men 18 to 49 will be enacted and General Crowder has ordered Local Boards to begin registration immediately. Registration day will be early in September and the law aims to avoid drafting more men with false enlistments.

Lincoln County residents showed strong support for the University Sumter School at Laramie with the largest county attendance in the state thirty one students. A Lincoln County stunt party won first place in a gymnasium contest portraying local industries.

Funeral of Mrs Anna Miller in Diamondville

The funeral of Mrs Anna Miller of Diamondville was held at the Diamondville Church with speakers T. Morrison and Gilbert Tavsom. Her body was shipped to Lamar Utah for burial beside her husband. Mrs Miller leaves three children, a sister and a brother, and resided in Len Coe for years where her husband ran the company store.

Children’s annual picnic at county bridge area

The event, hosted by the church for its young parishioners, featured about forty children and athletic sports at a chosen grassy site near the County Bridge on Nometork. A lunch and limited ice cream and soda were served. The party returned home around six in the evening after a day of recreation.

25000 Nurses Wanted for United States Student Nurse Reserve

The government calls 25 000 young women ages nineteen to thirty to train as nurses. Enrollment options include civilian nursing schools and the Army Nursing School with readiness to serve by April 1 1919. Superior qualifications receive preference and not all applicants will be accepted.

Billy Sunday Spotted in Kemmerer Station

Local sighting reports Billy Sunday in Kemmerer last Sunday in front of the depot while waiting for a train. Mr. Glasgow of the Comer identified Sunday as the famed ballpark inspiration from a past Murphysboro game and recalled the incident when introduced. Sunday and his family were headed east after a summer stay at his Washington home.
