Ball Mask Invented by a Harvard Player
A Harvard team captain, Fred G. Thayer of Boston, and catcher Harry Thatcher pioneered the first baseball mask in the 1870s. Thayer introduced a crude face covering in Harvard games, with Thatcher donning it as the first wearer amid ridicule. Spalding later secured the patent on February 12, 1878, while Bangor’s F. H. Davis preserves the original mask used by Addison Hantin.

Western Twirler Has Record Without Equal
Walter Johnson born in Anaheim California, 19 years old, signs to pitch for Washington American League. He opened the season in Idaho State League with 75 scoreless innings and 166 strikeouts in 99 innings, seven straight shutouts, and teams scoring 98 runs to opponents five. He has 18 strikeouts in several games and once struck out the first eight batters. Johnson also pitched 49 innings in California without a hit for Olinda. His steady, businesslike play and California confidence prompt skeptics to predict him at the top of major league pitching next year. The Walser team regards him as a star in a pro roster.
