Courts to rule on government patent cancellation

By direction of the attorney general John F. Ryan of Sioux City is named defendant in a US court case brought by the government. Attorneys Wagner and Porter represent the government in seeking cancellation of a patent issued to Ryan for a homestead in Lyman County. The complaint states Ryan entered the land Sept 19, 1902 and proved up Dec 7, 1908 with the patent issued Apr 17, 1905. The suit charges the patent was procured through improper means.

Government alleges fraud in homestead proof by Ryan

The complaint contends Ryan did not reside continuously on the homestead as claimed and that he visited the land only briefly while working at the Cudahy packing plant in Sioux City. The government claims his family never lived there, improvements were overvalued, and the land was not used for cultivation or grazing. A special examiner was appointed to hear depositions in Sioux Falls with deadlines set for February 25 for the government and March 15 for Ryan, followed by 15 days for rebuttal.

The secretary lists items for the Market Day Sale on Saturday February 6 including horses a three year old mare, cows and springers, registered Duroc Jersey boars and shoats, two dozen Plymouth Rock chickens, White Leghorn roosters and Plymouth Rock roosters, plus miscellaneous goods such as washing and sewing machines, rope, stoves, and a corn sheller. Also notes money to loan on farms via F E Reidinger Land Agency and a social mention of Miss Florence Pendell visiting Miss Mary Neiman and the dance last Friday evening in Murdo Coyote.

District officers and teachers meet at Kadoka in 1909

An annual meeting for school officers and teachers in Stanley county will be held at the Kadoka School house on Wednesday February 10 1909. Sessions run from 10 00 AM to 5 00 PM with music talks and discussions on reading education and measurement. Some schools may close for the day.
