Peter O'Brien, a 70 year old Civil War veteran, risked the currents to recover a long-missing man’s body half a mile from shore near Jacob Schweizer’s farm on the Desplaines River. The coroner praised his courage as the inquest returned a verdict of fact. The body was unidentified and buried in Potter's Field. O'Brien is brother of Thomas O'Brien, former Joliet police chief.
