Governor Hadley shocks party by backing Wisconsin as tempo for a temporary chairman fight. Delegates seated under new alignment as Roosevelt and La Follette seek control.
Chicago June 18. The Republican national convention opens at the Coliseum with Col Roosevelt in command of strategy and President Taft linked to events from the White House. Hadley’s surprise move backs McGovern, La Follette coalition evident as crowds fill seats and police guard aisles before gavel fall.
Joliet is planned as the 1914 Western Catholic Union convention host city with twenty three Joliet delegates anticipated to attend the Rock Island meeting next October. J A Wilhelmi may serve again as officer. St Aloys France No 21 has fourteen delegates and leads with about 1000 members overall. the other branches will elect delegates in the coming month.
Five foreign fishermen were arrested by Deputy Game Warden E H Werner for illegal seining on the C O P railroad area near Joliet. Five pleaded guilty to unlawful use of seines with fines split as Micha Rovina $100 and Tony Bikchina Geo Spapa Pete Capalo and John Fini $50 each.
John Kempke arrested after attempting to kill Fritz Miller was brought before Justice McCulloch. He requested a continuance. trial set for June 27 at 10.4 a.m. Bond fixed at $2,000. Miller remains hospitalized at St. Joseph's after three stab wounds.
Nunzio Di Lorenzo was chosen in Joliet to collect data on Italians in Will County. He will survey population numbers, cattle and property values, bank holdings, and future prospects from a detailed questionnaire. The effort aims to gauge true conditions among Italian immigrants.
William Hennessey was the sole candidate for assistant chief of police after a board exam led by President John Foster. Foster conducted the session as Beuttenmueller and Heggie were absent, with questions covering residence education authority duties and police chief relations to the mayor. The seventh question on mayor relations was deemed most critical, and Hennessey was believed to answer from prior experience.
