Warden E M Allen arranged a 20 foot Christmas tree in the Llinios state penitentiary dining hall for 1200 inmates. The morning meal featured a vaudeville entertainment, a special dinner and expanded liberties as guards and Mrs Allen contributed decorations and gifts to boost morale on Christmas Day.
Mrs Meard McCormick, Chicago society leader, prepares to go to Washington to chair the National Suffrage Association’s congressional committee. She was appointed to succeed Miss Alice Paul after national officials failed to reappoint her.
Joliet will host a National Children’s Day program at I. C. C. F. Temple 666 Cass Street starting 2 30 p m Sunday. Proceeds go to Calumet Mich for relief after 75 children died in a false fire panic on Christmas Eve.
About fifty Joliet News carriers will visit Joliet theater tomorrow afternoon as guests of circulation manager J. D. Wolfort. They will attend the play The Spenders by the new stock company, a treat for their Christmas rush efforts.
About thirty five applications for saloon licenses were filed today at the city clerk office for the coming year. Current licenses expire next Wednesday night and all applications will be in by Monday night for council review. The license committee will report at a special council meeting perhaps Wednesday evening. Police scrutiny targets troublesome saloonkeepers with no expected increase in licenses.

The first drowning in the Illinois and Michigan canal occurred on Christmas Eve in Ottawa.
