The oldest private banking institution in Northern Will County faces closure following the sudden disappearance of owner John I. Evarts. Authorities investigate missing-person clues and consider financial irregularities tied to the bank’s operations.
Farmers swarm Plainfield as the Evarts bank fails to open and proprietor John I Evarts is missing. George McClester and others supervise the vault, while depositors fear losses from a $3,000 protested draft. Local firms, lodge funds, and town treasurers are tied to the bank as hope for funds and private ownership wavers amid a wider shift to a new state bank led by J W Patterson.
City heads are studying deficits for the coming fiscal year. Appropriations last year totaled 510850.14 across departments including Health Electrical Fire and Police and the library. Officials expect to frame the budget ordinance by mid next month after December expenditures are tallied.
