Postmaster John T. Clyne urges early mailing to ensure Christmas delivery. He lists packing rules, stamping guidance, and insuring options, noting Red Cross seals allowed on address side until Jan 1. Deadlines specify city by city mailing dates for timely arrival.
Charles A. DeCoo, a former Joliet resident now in Lag in San Pedro, was struck by an automobile November 28 and suffered a dislocated left arm, fractured scapula, two broken ribs, back contusion, shoulder and leg wounds, facial abrasions, scalp and nose cuts, and a right eye contusion. At Pacific hospital in Los Angeles his doctor reported December 5 that he is in very good condition and expected to recover if no complications arise.
The Parent Teachers Association of the Seventh ward will conduct a spelling match Friday at 2 30 in the afternoon. Fourth grade pupils from Woodland Longfellow and Richards Bineet schools compete with Miss Hdna Keith in charge and a committee of judges. Mrs K C Fitch offers a prize for the winter.
W H Smith the Goodenow candidate for county board announced in Chicago that he would turn loose Smiths to support his candidacy. The threat is noted as formidable with 75 Smiths in the local telephone directory and 149 in the city directory, plus many in rural districts.
Announcement notes Mayor H. F. Wood will speak at the Universalist auditorium this Thursday evening on how law is enforced and not enforced. Attorney George W. Young will discuss curious aspects of the law and how law is not law. The event promises side lights on administration and is free to the public.
Joliet merchants adopt extended evening hours to move holiday stocks while avoiding over ten hour shifts for women workers under state law. Many stores may hire extra clerks, stagger shifts, and delay openings to comply and meet holiday demand. State inspectors will patrol to enforce regulations this season.
Fifty years ago today on December 11 Federal batteries fired incendiary shells into Charleston causing a fire and heavy casualties at Fort Sumter with ten killed and thirty wounded. Twenty five years ago today nine oyster pirates die in a clash with Maryland police during Chesapeake Bay dredging crackdown.
Jack Drumgoole, former Joliet and Chicago prizefighter, withdraws not guilty pleas and pleads guilty to the murder of Cherry du St. Maurice, queen of the Sacramento tenderloin. A death sentence is expected for Drumgoole. accomplice Samuel Raber faces death on January 2.
The Forefathers gather at First Presbyterian church for the annual supper at 7 o'clock. A chicken pie feast for 300 guests plus a program headlined by toastmaster Dr. A Laing promises the best ever. Chicago guests Mrs H M Beckwith and R G Stoops are noted as contributors.
Robert H. Conklin reports being struck by an auto at Washington and Chicago streets. The vehicle, whose license is traced to D. H. Gabel of Dwight, fled the scene with Conklin’s suitcase struck and the wheels ran over the case. Chief Murphy alerted Dwight authorities for a warrant.
The will of T. H. Riley died November 6 is probated. Dated May 16 1912 it provides 75 dollars monthly for life to Permelia Stoddard and a like sum to Ella Barry. The estate includes real estate in East Joliet with specified lots and blocks to Mary Riley and John J. Webb.
Assistant Chief Tom Ruddy and four firemen narrowly avoided disaster when a bearing failed on the auto truck during three rapid alarms. Driver Joe Shea kept control as the vehicle swerved on Cass Street Bridge, preventing a collision with girders. Police pursue two suspects in a suspected false alarm plot. the truck will be replaced by the hose wagon until repairs arrive.
Friends report C A DeCoo, once a Joliet businessman and brother in law of Mrs George Hansen of Manhattan, was badly hurt at his Los Angeles home while repairing his car. He was struck by a passing vehicle and suffered fractures to two or three ribs and an arm, remaining unconscious for a period.
Gaby Deslys, the musical star who aided the dethronement of King Juan of Portugal, told a St Louis audience that American men are like big babies. She said they are impulsive and untrustworthy, claiming they befriend quickly and forget just as fast.
Joliet born actress Jessie Huston opens a three day engagement at the Orpheum theater in Miss Nobody From Starland. The former Joliet girl is praised by eastern critics and appears in the title role supported by a local delegation from Braceville.
Mrs. Alice Davis Sing was placed on trial for the murder of her Chinese husband Charles Sing in Chicago before Judge McDonald. The courtroom was filled with whites and Orientals as defense attorney Maurice Lennon of Joliet appeared for the defense.
Joe McQuade was fined $1 and $2 costs for drunk and disorderly conduct. John Meyers was fined $1 and costs for intoxication. In police court this morning.
Paul Murphy and 182 county farmers gathered at a mass meeting to approve widening the oil and crop improvement group’s membership and to back a publicity campaign. The plan includes broadening access for all farmers and hosting a January banquet to educate the public and seek endorsements.
