Paris dispatch reports that British forces landed 400000 troops on French soil to reinforce the line along the Yser. Heaviest fighting continues northeast of Ypres with heavy cannonading as Germans mass new forces between Ostend and Ypres for a major attack against Allied defenses.
Kaiser Wilhelm visited troops on the firing line at Czenstochowa in southeast Poland. The official statement says the eastern theater situation remains unchanged.
Petrograd reports German assault failing as Russian forces push on the Vistula near Lowicz and advance toward Lodz. German defenders retreat north of Lodz while reinforcements rush to threatened fronts. Gracow faces heavy Russian attack and enveloping movement continues with fall of the city hourly anticipated. Russians move five army corps to Czestanchowa and Randomsk to ease center pressure.
In Port Said Egypt on December 4 the British flooded a large desert area to defend the Suez Canal after Moslems defeated a small British detachment and neared the canal. British advisers hoped to trap the enemy as the pursuit continued.
Clarence O Hearn 116 Mississippi Avenue left hospital yesterday after being shot in the leg by Rock Island Special Officer Robert Shurson. He faces burglary trial next Thursday before Judge Lumsey and is expected to mount a strong defense. Witnesses may show he was returning home waiting for a freight train when the officer fired. The Rock Island Railroad reportedly hopes to avoid a heavy damage suit.

Barney Bertsche, ex convict and politician, visited Hoyne and may also testify. Ryan is jailed in Illinois State Penitentiary. no court order to bring him to Chicago.
Patrick Doherty a laborer was instantly killed when struck by the south bound Alton Limited near the Texas Oil Works in Lockport at noon. An on site workman found his body and he was taken to Alton station and then to W C Goodale’s undertaking parlors on Ninth Street. The dead man’s workman’s card identified him but no address was given and authorities will search for relatives.
Will County Farmers Institute officials meet at the courthouse to finalize plans for the annual event. The Peotone session is set for January 20 and Joliet for January 21 to 23. An invitation to Governor E F Dunne to speak at Joliet has not yet been acknowledged.
The funeral for Mrs Mary Smith pioneer resident of Manhattan was held at St Joseph's church in Manhattan at 9 o'clock with burial in Mt Olivet cemetery Joliet. She leaves five daughters Mrs Jennie Riley Mrs Thomas Gray Mrs Arthur Baskerville and Misses Hattie and Margaret and four sons John Joliet Herbert Thomas and Bernard.
Sheriff elect George M Scholl announces staffing shifts with Fred Pearson named chief deputy and William Hall to jail keeper. David Powell, hero of Cherry Mine disaster, and William Schellson join as bailiffs while William Hinkel remains elevator man and William Hall retains jailer duties.
