A prominent woman suffragist asserts on a coast to coast trip that if municipalities elected women as mayors graft and corruption would vanish. She argues female leadership would curb political excess and promote ethical governance.
A fragmented opinion piece argues women should be mayors as city needs resemble a household. It claims men must marry, suggests a $100 yearly tax for bachelors over twenty five, and asserts women would curb graft with superior city services and social programs.
Mrs. Reg Copley Baum sister of Cassresaman Ire C. Copley arrives in Chicago after a coast to coast auto trip and break in Marengo Iowa. She predicts winning San Diego mayoralty with 11000 women and 12000 men backing her and argues municipal government should be run by women. She cites graft resistance and focus on city services as key.
The car used by Joliet youths in a Chicago trip and arrests was identified as Frank J. Durlling’s vehicle from 6205 Ellis Avenue. Arnold Fiel of Joliet was bound over to the grand jury. Edward Knief and George Keith, both 21, were arrested as gang members linked to multiple auto thefts in Chicago. Four cars recovered and returned to owners.
Wallie Ellis postmaster of Seneca and local politician suffered a stroke of paralysis while seated in the grand stand at the Grundy county fair yesterday afternoon around 4:80. He toppled forward during a ball game and was unable to speak after the attack. F. E. Hewitt of Joliet aided him and he was taken to a nearby hotel for care. Ellis has served as postmaster for much of the last twenty years and is well known in Joliet.
In an interview Mrs Baum explains she is not a politician but cannot stay silent about graft. She argues graft hampers city growth and calls for action to reduce excessive costs and corruption. She says she entered public life to push for reform.
Miss Kate Miller, manager of the Coal City Chicago telephone exchange, soars in a Somerville biplane with aviator Earl Daugherty at Mazon. They race two passenger trains and pass a third, clocking a six mile course in minutes and pausing to tease the Joliet bound flyer. The crowd at Grundy county fair swells to about 7,000 as spectators watched the stunt and awaited further flights.
William Fleming brings a Scotch menagerie to Joliet after a three month visit to Scotland. The shipment includes a prize Shetland pony, Irish water spaniels, Ayredale terrier, skylarks, and several cages, with duties noted. Ponies and dogs are valued up to hundreds of dollars, and one spaniel is returned to Milwaukee.
Incandescent lights at Richards Street school grounds were turned on last night for the first time. Superintendent Strasser of the Public Service company installed them for public benefit. They will stay lit until ten o clock each night to allow residents to play tennis.
Mrs Henning Hanson of 1008 Irving Street is critically ill after four weeks with typhoid fever. Reports said she had shown slight improvement last week but relapsed yesterday, and her condition remains grave. several Gas residents are following the case.
An improved furnace arrangement at the Joliet steel mill will save thousands yearly by using coke dust that previously went to waste. The Parsons' system conveys coke dust from the coke plant to boiler rooms to heat and reduce coal costs and fireman pay, with installation expected before cold weather.
An insane woman named Caroline Beers from Greenville Ohio was arrested in Columbus at the Southern Hotel while waiting for President Taft. She carried two long knives concealed in her clothing and a photo on one blade. A $200 roll was also found on her.

Joliet police seek Mar guerite Boyles of Taylorville Illinois who vanished Aug 5 from home and is believed to be in Joliet. Fifteen year old with light brown hair, five feet four inches tall, about 155 pounds. She may have traveled with a young man and has Joliet relatives.
John Mitchell of the AFL will deliver the principal address as Labor Day plans are finalized. The Trades & Labor council approved a $500 city donation with unions contributing heavily and merchants not solicited. A large parade is anticipated with city officials and special train delegations, and a detailed marching line and line of march were announced.
