Joliet hosts a city visit with Hov Johnson and Funk appearing at the Joliet Theater. The event marks the longest visit on the trip and is billed as a major meeting in the city.
News notes that Governor Hiram Johnson of California will appear in Joliet likely at the theater on Tuesday evening September 10. The event, to be managed by Brewster with Col Chauncey Dewey's word, is planned as a large early campaign rally with delegates from Du Page and other counties expected. Roosevelt’s running mate will also tour Illinois with nine scheduled speeches, including events at Streator Fair and Joliet, on a state-wide push for the Progressive ticket.
Thomas M. McCarthy, Davenport contractor and past bidder on Jo les and Aurora projects, died after a Grinnell area car crash caused by a defective brake. His firm, McCarthy Improvement Co., had recently bid on a bridge over Spring Creek and completed several contracts in Aurora.
James W. Lewis, promoter of the Gordon Bennett Aeroplane Cup at Argo, secured heavy rollers to complete leveling of the race course. The 126 mile race, under the Illinois Aero club, will be held on a large tract near Argo. The course is an extended octagon with two miles between opposite points.

Three youth prisoners Albert Fox John Benson and Charles Howard awaiting trial confessed to conspiring to break from Will County jail after a two foot deep cavity was found behind a radiator in the west cell room. They had spent weeks digging toward freedom and were stopped when jailer Wills and a mason sealed the hole.
The Peerless and its consort Red Wing loaded with cement from a Salle are stalled in the canal north of Jackson Street due to irregularities in the machinery. They passed Jackson Street Dock about 1 30 this afternoon heading to Chicago. Captain W H Wallace expects repairs by morning to reach Chicago.
Chris Nielsen of Moldt’s Grove Jackson township died at St Joseph’s hospital after a staging collapse at Leslie Geise farm Florence township. Nielsen aged 36 born Isle of Als and married to Marie Hansen left behind three children Huluf Dorothea and Chris and a Missouri resident father. The accident highlighted farm owner liability under Section 20 of the new law. Moldt escaped with minor injuries and Nielsen’s funeral set for Thursday at the Presbyterian church in Elwood with burial at Maple Hill cemetery.
City health department announces bacteriological tests show Brady spring water at 2107 Collins Street and hydrant samples on North Hickory Street are excellent for drinking. Illinois State University and minors state university conducted tests. four well samples pending and four more shipped for testing with results expected later this week.
Miss Josephine Zobel continues in the lead in the Labor Day Queen contest, ahead of her closest rival by about 100 percent. The morning vote totals show Zobel with a substantial margin and unclear trailing figures amid garbled text.

Ed Whalen and Deputy Evan Isaacs saved inmate Vinko Krepenc at Wil County jail on the eve of his Goodspeed court hearing after he attempted to end his life by eating soap. Rev R H Nye will deliver the address. A Nova Scotia native who moved to Illinois in 1858 he spent most of his life in Will County. Survived by a widow a son Fred and two grandsons Earl and Arnold Muhlig of Jo Het.
After work a Joliet barber fell asleep in a car while friends searched for gasoline. He awoke to find his gold watch and $18 missing, and the car was parked across from a fire station. The incident underscores the risk of dozing in a moving ride.
The third inspection trip of the Ly and M canal has been postponed to next week at the request of John Glenn secretary of the Illinois Manufacturers' association who aims to mobilize a large party and showcase a complete waterway from Chicago to Joliet and to the canal’s far end. The Joliet to Fort Dearborn leg was initially planned for tomorrow but was delayed to drum up interest and gather a crowd.
