Nish Servia Aug 22 United Press reports a three day clash along the Drina River left Austria routed with 25 000 dead wounded and prisoners. Servians forced bayonet charges, broke Austrian left wing, and the retreat began as Servian pursuit pressed.
A fragmentary score roundup lists early baseball results from the American League. Names such as Cicotte, Schalk, Warhop, Nanamaker, Foster, Cady, Dubuc, Stanage, Engel, Henry, Shawkey, and Schang appear in partial lineups with teams including New York, Boston, Detroit, Washington, St. Louis, and Philadelphia. Ralph DePalma won the second day of the Rigid National Road race driving a Mercedes at 78.5 mph. His finish time was four hours, five minutes, eighteen seconds. Eddie Pullen finished second in a Mercer four hours, seven minutes, twenty-eight seconds, with Barley Oldfield third in a Stutzette.
Paul Papista, a stranger, was found dying of starvation and exposure on Woodruff Road near Forest Park. He was rushed to Silver Cross Hospital in a critical condition and remains between life and death. Dr. Grant Houston noted likely intoxication and severe exposure with doubtful recovery.
