James Hess a 17 year old left home Thursday afternoon for his pay at the steel mills and disappeared. Police and his parents fear heat and a past sun stroke left him wandering with memory lapses and no sign of foul play. A city wide search is underway as friends join the effort to locate him.
Tenor Aubrey Yates begins a week at Joliet Theater after headlining in Chicago. He will present daily selections from his repertoire including Alma, Where Do You Live, and other famous arias. The program features a two-reel feature The High Stice with Irving Cummings and A War Time Mother’s Sacrifice.
A false alert at Louis Moore's Western avenue home prompted two fire companies to respond, then a second call led to a real blaze at Joliet Nurseries on the Troy Road where a straw stack burned but threatened nearby buildings. A small clothes closet fire at Susan Shields' house on Main Street caused minor damage from smoke.

Friends say Miss Jessie Wilson daughter of President Wilson aided her fiancé Sayre in choosing to take an offer from President Harry A Garfield of Williams College to be his assistant Sayre will head the Abandonment Bureau in the district attorney's office until next November and begin duties at Williams College in January. the couple will take a two months honeymoon after their wedding.
Work on the Rockdale school addition is progressing with the roof being installed. Enclosure is expected within a week and interior finishing will complete the project, increasing capacity to handle natural population growth and overcrowding in the old building.
The price of milk has been raised to eight cents a quart by several city dealers citing scarcity and higher grain costs. Some dealers have not yet implemented the raise as dry summer conditions persist and input costs rise, with broader national trends pushing dairy prices higher.
Governor Edward F. Dunne announces John A. Kerrins of Chatsworth as superintendent of the Illinois State Reformatory at Pontiac replacing R. A. Russell of Bloomington. The Civil Service Commission orders civil service appointees to avoid outside positions while on state pay.
John 8 Anderson a former lawyer and reporter at the Joliet News is recovering at Silver Cross hospital after an appendectomy performed by Dr. Alfred Houston. The operation was successful and Anderson, who came to Joliet from Wheatland, completed his duties before surgery and remains in good condition for now.
Police arrest Judge Frank J. Nolan after J. L. Murphy, a towerman, accuses him of larceny and beating. Murphy says Nolan met him in a Collins street saloon and forced him to surrender over $20 after drinking and visiting a disorderly house near Forest Park. Nolan, with prior police record, will be arraigned on larceny charges.
Circuit Clerk Louis H. Piepenbrink and Recorder W. W. Smith plan to attend the twelfth annual convention of the Circuit Clerks and Recorders Association of Tilmets in Ottawa next week. The gathering is expected to be one of the largest in state history. Piepenbrink serves on several key committees. A visit to Starved Rock and other Ottawa features is planned for attendees.
Today is pay day as city payroll distributes checks totaling 9401.51. Department heads receive all checks for their unit and ensure the funds reach the workers.
Judge Campbell voided the citys peddling license rule after hearing that it overstepped municipal power. The decision held the ordinance wrongly bounds peddlers including merchants delivering by wagon and broadens license scope beyond statutor y definitions, invalidating the act. The case was argued in Kankakee courts with City Attorney Wise representing municipal interests and Louis Lagger for the peddlers.
Shut off crews on the east side cut water to residents without meters or dealer orders as city enforces an ordinance. Joliet and Plainfield relatives note the ordination of Father Vincent Arbeiter at Santa Clara California. Father Arbeiter celebrated his first mass at Saint Claus Church in Santa Clara a week ago. He is the son of William B Arbeiter, a Plainfield farmer years ago, and the family has resided in California for some time.
New York's Mrs Margaret Middleton became the first donor in a blood transfusion effort for her husband who died of anemia after eight transfusions. She had previously donated blood in two sessions totaling 25 ounces and remains gravely ill.
Harry Taylor alias Harry Sibbald was arrested by Detective William Hennessy after attempting to take hams from a local packing firm. Police accuse him of petty crimes over weeks, including a Cass Street clothing theft. He faces false pretenses charges and a hearing in Judge Lumley's court this afternoon. the 22 year old has prior police court history and a Pontiac term on his record.
John Lambert a Greek owner of the Brooklyn pool and billiard room on Chicago street was arrested for permitting gambling. Detectives found several young men playing Kelly pool. He paid a $10 fine and costs in police court as City officials press actions against minors in pool halls.
Postal changes set August 15 1913 as the effective date lifting parcel post weight to 26 pounds from 11. Local delivery packages will be charged five cents for the first pound and one cent for each additional two pounds, with first and second zones applying different rates. A 20 pound parcel to town costs about 15 cents, and rural-to-town deliveries vary by zone.
