Mint 1804 Silver Dollars and 1856 Pieces Mystery
A late report notes 19 570 silver dollars dated 1804 were minted in a year and today fewer than a dozen survive, each worth a fortune. 150 000 half dollars were minted that year but only one remains. The fate of that year’s silver coinage is an enduring government mystery. Thirty two years later about 1 000 of the 1856 dollars were coined, yet a buyer can still pay a thousand dollars for one.
