The Steel Works Club will hold its formal opening this evening with arrangements yet to be completed for entertainment and guest participation. Members and guests are expected to attend and participate in the event in the venue.
The Works Club announces a 7 PM opening with art displays on the third floor and a program of soprano Miss Mary B Shepherd piano Miss Elizabeth Patchell violin Frac Delos Crandall and others. Afterglow features Imperial Quartette and refreshments with gymnasium events and a lecture series on topics from Coke plant control to turbines.
A disturbed woman identified only as Mary Doe is held at the county jail after transfer from a police station. She is described as possibly Mrs Mary Main and remains an unexplained case with relatives not located and unclear origins.
Watkins of Ohio spoke last night in the courthouse yard urging the Prohibition party as many prominent Republicans and Democrats grow disillusioned with campaigns. About fifty listeners gathered in a sheltered nook as Alonzo E. Wilson introduced the guest, who then traveled to Naperville earlier and planned further appearances before heading to Lansing, Michigan.

Dr Carrie A Bennett narrowly escaped severe burns while cleaning with gasoline at 104 Buell Avenue. The flammable liquid ignited, flames spread to a lace curtain and woodwork before Mrs Calvin Zarley and Dr Bennett put out the fire by turning on the sink and beating flames with a rug. Companies 2 end 5 and the No 1 fire truck responded to the alarm.
Actual work has started on track elevation by the Chicago and Alton and Santa Fe. Fifty laborers began the job under Chief Engineer Cook with a goal to reach Osgood street before snow. The two railroads will work in tandem, shaping the right of way and driving a tunnel at Fifth avenue to ease the crossing.

Today on Old Soldiers Day at the State Fair old soldiers enter free and receive bronze medals featuring Thomas W. Lawler of Joliet. A parade marched before the grand stand this morning. Delegates elected John M. Egebs, banker of Carmt, as president of the new state board of agriculture for two years.
Daniel Orsini is held at the county jail on a attempted murder charge after stabbing Anton Stahl on Scott Street Saturday night. Stahl is in St Josephs hospital recovering. Orsini's case is set for Saturday October 10 with bonds fixed at 500 dollars by Judge Allen.
Susanna Hrams of 506 Cedar Slip swore out a police court warrant for Mike Bodner of 503 Cedar Slip charging assault and battery. She alleges he attacked her yesterday beating her with fists and tearing her clothes.
Will County Medical Society held its first dinner of the 1908 09 season at Hobb s Cafe. Dr James B DeLee, slated guest of honor, did not appear but speeches by Doctors William Dougall Harry Woodruff M E McGann F W Werner D W Jump W H Curtis and Eldgredge kept the event lively The society welcomed Dr Cody of Mokena and Dr Eldredge. Dinner consisted of four courses.
Frederick Douglas, barber at 726 Washington Street, rescued his 6 year old daughter from Owen McNamee 48 after he chased her. Douglas struggled with McNamee until police arrived and McNamee was jailed. McNamee fined one dollar and costs for drunkenness and three dollars and costs for disorderly conduct.
Sheriff Normandin of Ken Dal County makes levy in favor of Chicago creditors, leaving surveyors without equipment and triggering a costly halt to county projects.
The Chicago and Kansas City railroad faces funding shortages as Atlanta Construction Co struggles to pay workers. Survey crews were left homeless after sheriff sales of equipment. Promoter B F Harristy claims hard markets impede financing, though extensive right of way has been purchased. Construction began six weeks ago in Kendall County near Troy township.
The Joliet football team will play the Aurora Athletics next Sunday afternoon on Hurd's Island. This will be their first game, but they are confident of winning. the Athletics have played two games this year, both ending in scoreless ties.
