Mayor Cronin proposes traffic squad at key city crossings

The Mayor outlines a plan to hire at least five officers for a traffic squad to protect pedestrians at Chicago intersections including Chicago and Cass Clinton Jefferson Ottawa and Exchange Bluff Streets. Residents Fight to Reopen Ingalls Park School

Knights of Columbus Seek Civic Holiday on Columbus Landing

Joliet Council No. 482 petitions city to set October 12 as a civic holiday in honor of Christopher Columbus. Petition signed by T. V. Brennan, Maurice Lenfon, M. and Joseph Ktopec, referred to Ordinances after presentation to the council. The Knights noted the date is observed in five hundred cities across the United States Canada and Mexico.

Victor Caswell sought relief after excavation between the First National Bank site and Scott Street sewer cut off ingress to his stables at 408 and 410 Van Buren for weeks. Officer Denies Charges Hearing Set for Wednesday

Officer Pesavento told the Board of Police and Fire Commissioners that the charges filed by Pasquale Specan are not true and said he will present witnesses at the Wednesday hearing. The dispute followed a September 14 altercation outside 1203 Collins Street with Frank Romano.

McCraney Promoted To Police Sergeant Tonight

James H. McCraney, former day patrol driver, is promoted to sergeant and will start tonight. The Civil Service Commission chose McCraney over George Mason, now a night detective, with Cronin re-appointing him. Don Ryan may move to day shift as a new night detail is filled.

Dam Blown On Illinois and Michigan Canal Near Henry

News item reports vandals blew up a dam on the Illinois and Michigan canal near Henry last night flooding a large district and emptying the canal. Detectives arrived to identify the culprits amid suspicions of anger over state canal bridge funding. A similar act occurred near Channahon a fortnight earlier. Dancing tonight at Dellwood.

Real Wild Man Wears Bryan and Kern Button

Leo Hrecayaym, once a Dunning inmate, captured near Custer Park, appeared before Judge Cowing as mentally deranged. He claimed release from Dunning on March 10, 1908, and wore a Bryan and Kern button at arraignment. A Cook County effort and local authorities are involved.

Grand Jury Indicts for Murder in Beltzner Cases

The September grand jury voted true bills against Anton Blouth and Matthew Statha for the Beltzner Store killings and against Lulu Gibson for the Taylor stabbing.
