Woman Struck and Killed by Touring Car in Joliet

Mrs. John Lye was crossing Ottawa Street near the County National Bank when an automobile owned by Martin Schuster, city treasurer, struck her. The car, with Thomas R. McGlashen aboard, weighed about 2200 pounds and sped at up to six miles per hour. Mrs. Lye died at the scene. coroners and police launched an official inquiry as witnesses described the accident and Schuster’s remarks.

Scrapyard Heist Leads to Grand Jury Probe in Two-Ton Switch

Sam Elkins a South Joliet street junk dealer supplied the horse and wagon and bought the stolen scrap shoes worth nine dollars per ton. Eugene Felker and Fred Kempf are charged with stealing two tons of scrap shoes from a side tracked car in the Alton yards. The loot was recovered and a grand jury will hear the cases, detectives report. Felker and Kempf were photographed and measured for the rogues gallery. Bugs case speculation follows.

Orioles Fight Joliet Rivalry Ends In Court Courting Chaos

A Joliet Orioles vs Plainfield Jarvis Rivals game at Jackson fair sparked a melee with stones and horsewhips after a purse dispute. Ivan Rhodes was struck on the head and a suspect, Robert Lowery, was arrested as police prepare warrants.

A nearby witness testified the vehicle moved slowly and Mr Lye appeared confused. He supported Mr Schuster’s account in other respects. Mrs Lye, 34, leaves a husband, a son named Fred, and a daughter Loretta.

A pleasant and successful dancing party was held last evening at Dellwood Park under the Knights of Columbus. About seventy five couples danced to Sweet's orchestra until late. Pesavento Suspended To Face Trial Board

Officer Christopher Pesavento of the city police force is suspended pending a Civil Service commission trial. Chief McMasters issued the order after charges allege failure to perform duties during the Romano-Jecan fight on North Colling Street. The trial hearing is set for the next Monday evening at police headquarters.

Kammeraad Fugitives Sought After Assault Claim

Deputy Sheriff John Dantl hunted through Chicago employment districts with a state war rant for Bert Kammeraad an eighteen year old charged with assaulting Emeline Lantz eight daughter of Henry Lantz of Frankfort. No trace of the fugitive found and authorities believe he is in hiding.

Jackson Fair at Moutldt's Grove Draws Big Crowd

About 1200 attended the closing session of the township fair in Jackson at Moutldt's Grove. Daniel Sheen spoke as the prohibition candidate for governor. A Sunday school basketball game and horse riding contests highlighted a day of festivities. Olive Spangler won the titling contest on her fourteenth birthday. Local officials noted the event's strong showing and Democratic speakers contrasted party aims with national needs.

Wheatland Readies for Annual Plowing Match Tomorrow

Wheatland prepares for the thirty first annual plowing match on Aar on Hafenrichter farm. Plows begin at 9 a.m. and end around noon with steam plow exhibitions. A Ladies Fair tent and a mess tent have been set up. Entries are being received for classes and many former residents have returned for the event. Joliet and Southern Traction Co expects large crowds and will run ample service.

Walter Morris eight year old of Torino Illinois has been missing since early yesterday morning. Sheriff’s office and Frank Motta Torino post master report he left home to drive a cow to pasture. Citizens searched the area through the night with no success.

Bloodier Street Fray Leaves Two Wounded Men

Two Black men were stabbed at the John Moore residence on South Chicago Street in a mid night to 1 am fight. Harry Kent, 23, is held by police on a murder charge as Mitchell 27 and Webster Johnson 512 South Desplaines suffer serious wounds.
