County supervisors oppose a proposed probation officer program arguing Joliet would benefit most. Sheriff Williams and Judge Cowing’s plan to hire a stenographer and extend bailiff pay was rejected, with debate delaying final action and most members wanting no delay.
A Aurora Post 20 G A R and local citizens plan to visit Chicago on September 22 to invite the state department council to host the 1909 G A R encampment in Aurora next May. The committees include John L Walker S M Farwell Gus Allcutt Ed Denney Prof J H Freeman and Mayor Finch Charles F Clyne.
Frank Lyman, a youth lacking property distinction, was arraigned before Magistrate Allen this morning and fined $25 and costs. He was arrested for stealing coal and wire from the Chicago & Alton Railroad Co.
At the Joliet Tropical Plantation Co annual meeting in Joliet an inspector to visit Mexico for rubber farm inspection was chosen. Directors J O Barrett T A Mason and G B Carey were re elected with Geo R Hill as inspector and W G Conklin as alternate. superintendent J C Dennis reported thriving rubber trees and side ventures including horses cattle and poultry. Ray Willis testified to a prosperous outlook and Yale plantation partnership noted.

Mrs. John Warnock testifies that her sister-in-law Mrs. Peterson attacked her at home with an axe and later struck her with a carpet sweeper. Peterson fled after neighbors intervened and officials were urged to arrest her as threats of further violence surfaced.

A rock island oil storage freight car fire near Desplaines street caused neighborhood alarm last night but was extinguished before material damage. Fire department under Chief Langdon quickly contained the blaze amid tinder dry conditions from weeks of drought.
Miss Blanche Hobby and Byron Richards both of Joliet quietly married Sunday afternoon at 1 30 by a member of the clergy. There were no attendants and the couple will make their future home in Joliet.

Twenty residents petitioned to reopen the Washington Street Ingalls School, proposing four grades to reduce transport to Woodland School.
Rock Island and Michigan Central have built 4800 yards of concrete retaining wall for the track hoisting movement. Alton and Santa Fe roads will soon start rails hoisting from Washington Street south but will not cross Washington Street this year.
