Organized labor followers refrained from a formal parade and program on Labor Day 1908, choosing private picnics and relaxed gatherings. Dellwood Park hosted crowds while Chicago Joliet traction lines ferried thousands to parks like Electric Park Plainfield and Highland Park.
A busy Sunday Labor Day period yielded 37 arrests for intoxication and disorderly conduct. Fel on Bola John Leaski and Joseph Labor fled city headquarters but were recaptured after a lengthy chase with shots fired. each fined $20.75. Ruthenbeck foreman and others fined for assaults. two youths jailed for disorderly conduct at a colored resort charged to pay $7.25. Four women named Lizale Griffiths and Ida among others faced fines.
No trace has been secured of G C Kuhn of Chicago who drowned when his launch was struck by the Richard B at Lemont. State's Attorney Healey and party on the Richard B caused the crash and did not assist. Rescue efforts by Kuhn family and others failed as divers searched the canal for hours.
Jollet Male Chorus enjoyed its final outing yesterday in Day Sve near Ingalls Park. The event took place east of town at David n's Grove with members from Jollet and surrounding communities in attendance.
McGee's Colts defeated the Chorus team in a ball game. Alfred Anderson won the men’s race, Hjalmar Tengdin took the boys’ prize, Emily John won the women’s race, and Florence Tengdin claimed the girls’ prize.
A seven year old Willie Watters started a fire in an old shed owned by Mrs. Dames on Bluff Street. Firemen quenched the blaze quickly. the shed was ruined and adjacent buildings suffered minor damage totaling about $200. No prosecution. corporal punishment promised by the boy’s father.
After months of hearings the Board adjourned with decisions including cancelling church parsonage assessments saving about 40 000 to 50 000 in county totals. Protests by the Sanitary District of Chicago and Prairie Oil & Gas Co were carried to Mayday September 21 for further action.
A witness testified that a Healy launch collision caused an accident at sea. He said his son’s smaller boat could not withstand the swell and the shock was so sudden the son could not swim or save himself, being carried under.
Dirt is dug today for the St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic church at Clay and Franklin. Rev Father M J Potochny organized Joliet action and has built four churches in three years, most recently in Streator. The church will measure 24 by 54 feet with Henry Koenig as contractor.
The Board of Supervisors opened its annual session this afternoon and adjourned to tomorrow at 10 o clock. Several important matters are to be disposed of including petitions for salary increases.
A horse and buggy owned by Jno. Craughwell of Desplaines street livery was stolen from Dellwood Park last night before 10. The rig was found in possession of Fred Diedrich at 107 Market street. Police are investigating the case.
A large Will county delegation and other Republican officials traveled via the Alton line to the state capitol for the Illinois Republican convention. Cannon slated as chairman. keynote speech anticipated. reception planned with senators congressmen and Governor Deneen receiving.
Edward R. Wright head of Illinois State Federation of Labor addressed Will County workers at Dellwood Park with a focus on improving labor conditions through united action and arbitration. He defended apprenticeship over trades schools and urged honest wages and safer workplaces while noting the dangers of unsafe, unsanitary, and high-cost living conditions.
