John Harte 70 a Channahon pioneer died by his own hand in the Illinois and Michigan Canal near the village after grieving for two years over his wife’s death. No witnesses. his coat and hat were found on the bank and his body towed ashore by local residents. He leaves four children, including Mrs Melissa Wringer of Channahon and Mrs Betsy Bilsland of Joliet, and a son Hiram Hart of Lockport.
Miss Hazel Goodspeed will entertain the Entre Nous club girls next Saturday evening at her home on Fourth Street.
A city hearing debated whether South Chicago street paving should be brick asphalt or macadam. Mayor Cronin, declaring himself poor, argued that wealthy residents protest any improvements touching their wallets. The hearing postponed final paving decisions to November, with objections and final hearings planned for October and November.

They stole 1600 dollars in cash and two large notes, escaping unseen after the nitroglycerine blast that shattered the shop. The crime is linked to recent heists in neighboring towns.
In Aurora on Friday a joint G A R and Women’s Relief Corps gathering announced the Department of Illinois encampment will be held in Aurora next May with over 10,000 veterans expected. Churches on Galena Street were offered for meetings including First Congregational, Presbyterian, People's, and First Methodist.

In Gary Indiana on October 1 plans are being prepared by Apchitéeet W C Hudson for a three story office and lodge building with basement billiard and bowling alleys to be erected on Broadway between Fifth and Sixth avenues for F M Savage superintendent of the Steel Works club of Joliet. The four story building 60 by 100 feet will be pressed brick with stone trim and a composition roof. It will feature Georgia pinched finish maple floors marble and tile work gas and electric fixtures and lavatories with an estimated cost of 20000 dollars.
Mary E. Hopkins dropped a $60,000 breach of promise suit against Adolphus Yonker a Spring Creek Drainage commissioner. Judge Marshall in the Circuit Yonker Tollet resident for years recently married Mrs. Hopkins settled the action.

President Ripley of the Santa Fe ordered a special train from Fort Madison to Chicago with Engineer Fitch at the controls. The 289 mile run from Kurt Madison to Chicago finished in 280 minutes including stops, breaking the previous four hour and forty minute mark set by the Death Valley Special three years ago. The run was not publicized beyond railroad men, while the local mail service makes the same trip in just over fifty minutes.
Dr R Anderson departs tonight for Southern Illinois to speak in support of the Republican party. He expects to be away from the city for a fortnight.
Light and Power Co. today issued a written statement denying rumors that the dam may be abandoned, affirming continued maintenance and operation plans.
The Economy Light & Power Co. will abandon its Dresden Heights dam on the Des Plaines after bondhouses questioned lease permanence. The company will move upstream one mile below Joliet to a new dam site amid expected further litigation and riparian-right protections.
