Haywood, Son and Peter, all residents or associates of the MaskedMien family, were victims in a frightening robbery early last evening at a location north of the city. Police report no injuries but describe the incident as a harrowing encounter. Investigations are ongoing.
A. A. Haywood his son Howard and sister Mary were bound and threatened by two masked men who claimed law enforcement status then posed as convicts. They stole $70 to $75 a gold watch and a horse and buggy before escaping. Family bound to bed posts and assaulted with threats as officers of the law. Detectives under Chief McMasters and Captain Murphy pursue leads while Haywood and neighbor Frank Sprague aid police.
At the Marianna mine 78 of 83 bodies brought to surface are identified. five remain headless and unnamed. About 30 more bodies reportedly in sight as officials, including Chief McMasters, launch a general investigation.
A Joliet group led by the Commercial club plans to travel to Washington December 9 10 and 11 for the National Rivers and Harbors convention. Mayor Cronin likely attends as the city’s sole representative with A W Flexer A E Mottinger R Herath and John Carlson filling county roles. C W Jordan and Thomas Grier will be replaced by J C Adler and H E Wood. George H Munroe may join the party from Florida to carry Chicago resolutions to the president.
LaPorte November 30 Judge Richter overruled Lamphere’s motion for a new trial in circuit court The defense appeals to the Supreme Court claiming erroneous judge instructions and a verdict contrary to law in the Lamphere case.
The mayor circulates a petition among property owners and secures support to pave Blue Street with bricks. Thoroughfare improvements extend from Exchange to Marion, aiming to upgrade a main street with brick paving and related work.
Mayor Cro nin circulated a petition for brick paving on South Bluff Street from Exchange to Marion. The Board of Local Improvements was to act, but the paper did not reach officials. The Porter Brewing Company is affected as gravel is removed for macadamizing the stretch planned for early spring under favorable weather.
The last two members Gus Bayer and Harry Michaels of the gang passing counterfeit five dollar bills were captured early today. They confessed to secret service men. Bayer said the scheme was easy and surrendered after Kittie Malone, captured this week with six others, had urged him to do so.
The Commercial club Industrial committee will tour steel mills and the new coke ovens on Wednesday, December 2. A special coach and engine from the E. J. & FE will depart at 1 15 p m from the BHJ-B depot, with Supt. Mathias awaiting at the mills. The committee meeting planned for tomorrow is postponed one week.
John Mc Cauley sues Chicago & Joliet Ry Co alleging damages and seeks compensation. The defendant reportedly attempts to place responsibility on Chicago, Lake Shore & Pastern in a bid to shift fault.

The county court approved the coroner bond of William C Wunderlich for five thousand dollars with Ernest H Wunderlich and Jas Stiner as sureties. This action occurred this morning in county court.
German American residents of Jo-Net gathered at Arbeiter hall on North Bluff street for the twenty ninth anniversary dinner. Starrs' orchestra provided music as the group sang der faderland.
