Peter Burns proprietor of the Central House died at his North Chicago street home after returning from the Grand theater. Physicians said cerebral hemorrhage and investigators weigh possible poison or mail tampering theories. Four men were killed instantly and three were expected to die when a Chicago Burlington & Quincy suburban train crashed into two handcars loaded with laborers near Highland. The workers did not hear the approaching train, and women fainted amid much excitement as laborers were hurled into the air. Burlington officials said the train had the right of way.
William B. Jack, aged twenty four, died Tuesday morning at his parents home in Trinidad Colorado after a two week illness from pneumonia. He was a member of Modern Woodmen of America and Knights of Columbus. Survived by parents T. B. and wife, one sister Blanche and two brothers Thomas J. and George. Funeral held in Trinidad. Born in Brattleville Minnesota.
The city experienced an Indian summer mood with a 31 degree swing in temperature. Morning low reached 36 and a high of 67 in the past day, making the breeze feel unusually mild after near freezing conditions.
United States District Attorney Daniel W. Baker will ask that Frederick A. Hyde and Joost H. Schneider, found guilty of defrauding the government of extensive forest land in California and Oregon, be sentenced to two years in jail and fined $10,000 each. A man named Michael Joseph Walsh died after being struck by an extra northbound Chicago and Alton freight near Argo while attempting to steal a ride. He lost both legs, was moved to a southbound caboose, transported to St. Joseph's hospital in Joliet, and died en route. An inquest held this morning found the verdict consistent with the reported facts.
