Joliet chief reports wide range of city arrests

Chief McMasters presents 15 year crime data to Mayor Cronin showing Joliet as metropolitan. The record lists 468 drunks, 216 vagrants, 355 disorderly cases, 68 larcenies, 10 burglars, 16 assaults with weapons, 7 highwaymen, 23 concealed weapons, 11 Sunday violators, and other offenses.

City records show plumbing probe and crime notes from May 1907

Plumbing inspector Frank O Neill exposed two violators of city ordinance while a lone burglary suspect and John Mulac nicknamed Jack the Dauber faced charges. Police desk logs counted 6600 alert calls in May and 7233 in March, with counts of light outages, open doors, and mercy runs by the ambulance culminating in many sequestered dogs.

Funeral held for Rockdale saloonkeeper Jerry Moerentic

The funeral of Jerry Moerentic the Rockdale saloonkeeper killed by robbers Tuesday night was held at St Joseph's Austrian church on North Chicago Street this morning at 10 o'clock Rev Father Sustersie officiating. A band led the cortege and fraternal societies walked ahead. The church and cemetery services drew a large crowd.

Diptheria proved fatal for Joseph Turlip two year old son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Turlip 1117 North Broadway he was ill only a few days The funeral was held at the residence in the afternoon and was strictly private The house was fumigated immediately after.

Stockholders at a special Joliet Plantation Co meeting authorize a 12 000 00 investment to acquire a 2400 acre tract adjoining their Central Mexico rubber plantation. After a crossing accident on Columbia Street, August Stukel’s badly crushed arm was amputated at St Josephs Hospital following a consultation. He walked home soon afterward despite severe pain as the engine struck him in a storm.

Hammond Building to Be Rebuilt at Once

Definite plans for rebuilding the Hammond building at Jefferson and Ottawa, partly destroyed in the April 26 fire, were announced by owners L. J. Hammond and John W. D Arcy. The three story structure will feature a white glazed tile front, modern design, and a projected cost of 12000 to 15900 dollars. Debris clearing starts Monday with the rebuilding contract expected next week.

Fire destroys C A Buck Co undertakers shop

A blaze swept the C A Buck Co undertaking parlors on South Eastern avenue near Washington street last evening at 6. Chief Langdon and his men saved surrounding structure. Fred Carter suffered a cut breaking a glass door. Hiram Buck and Henry Snapp had just left minutes before. Smoke and fire damaged adjoining music store and rear rooms. one resident reported furniture damaged by smoke and water. The building, owned by S D P Chaney, carried $1000 in insurance. Buck stock insurance unconfirmed. Firefighters from stations 1 and 4 responded.

North Chicago Street Work Nears Completion Despite Weather

The force of men on the North Chicago street filling, led by the Street Department, has been seriously hindered by bad weather for several days but is expected to finish by tomorrow evening. The improvement greatly enhances the covered street section.

The May grand jury, active this week, will report to Judge Dibell in circuit court tomorrow morning. They visited the penitentiary and county jail yesterday, hosted by Warden Murphy and Sheriff Williams, with indictments completed and ready for return.

Clare Is Improved City Collector

Frank Clare, the city collector, who had been seriously ill with rheumatism for several days, was up today for the first time since his illness and his condition is greatly improved.

Ridding Rockdale of Undesirable Citizens

City police in Rockdale continue actions to remove suspicious persons and vagrants. This morning several men were adjudged common vagabonds and sentenced to thirty days in county jail. Nick Trabuich, Nick Raplish, Walter Peters, George Brown, James ONeil, and John Sweeney. James McGee was detained but released on request. he pleaded not guilty. Ongoing police efforts seek the identity of liquor dealer Jere Moerentic's shooter, with no suspects yet secured.

Hickory creek surged yesterday afternoon between 5 and 6 o clock alarming residents as flood waters rose and neared normal levels. Spring Creek drainage work saw embankments breached by flood waters creating an uninterrupted flow into the old channel.

John Teapot Dead in City After Prolonged Illness

John Teapot died at 4 20 am at 533 S Chicago Street after several months of illness. He was 45 and an early Italian resident who once passed as a Frenchman. Funeral Sunday at 10 from his home to St Anthony's for services at 10 30 and interment in St Patrick's cemetery. He had a daughter Miss Rudy Teapot 16 surviving. Mrs Teapot disappeared ten years ago and is reported dead in Kansas City, though unconfirmed.
