In Rockdale the Italian colony faces removal threats amid violence warnings. Special police are appointed to replace two dismissed officers and the town eyes an April 7 local option vote as nine saloons operate near Joliet.
Democrats gathered at Riley's hall on Van Buren street to discuss electing their township ticket. William Lennon presided with speakers James Bray Edward J Conley and D R Burke among others urging a strong campaign at the upcoming election. The crowd was not at capacity as plans for a political fight at the polls were affirmed. Joliet Oratorio Society performances and a concert on April 2 support the Settlement House and Central Gym benefit.
The Swiggart Trading company linked to Folk Swiggart and Collins is accused by John S. Reynolds of secret officer elections and improper payments. Reynolds seeks to bar Straus Bowles and Struve from the business and asks for a receiver, alleging ongoing theft and withheld dividends. The case overall centers on Illinois residents and a few South Dakota incorporators amid Joliet attention.
Circuit court proceedings were sparse with only formal motions to delay. Albert Bates, now a resident elsewhere, faced ongoing actions by John X. and others, discharged until nine. The tariff plank calls for flexible tariffs with minimum and maximum duties and a special session to re adjust schedules after the next president’s inauguration.
Mrs. Dinsmore formerly Miss Sarah Dobbins testified in Boston on March 26 that Lewis E. Dinsmore wooed her and faked his wealth, later revealed as a Joliet jailbird. The case details she was duped by his suave manner and apparent prosperity.
City electrician Hughes completed the transfer of the fire alarm and police report boxes to the underground system at Clinton and Chicago streets. The two boxes are now mounted on the same pole.
John Eich a farmer near Lockport is accused by Henry Maidment of taking lumber platforms doors axles wheels and other items valued at 35 while owner away Eich brought the goods to his own farm and a warrant for larceny was served. His hearing is set before Justice Hawk Friday at 10 AM.
A city road roller was brought to North Chicago Street this morning and put in service rolling the rip-rap filling on the east side. Crews have started spreading the material toward the west bank to secure the roadway.
