Officials believe a great fire at a barn was to cover tracks after a thief stole a horse. They suspect a diabolical plot connected to the theft and arson attempt.
Morris June 24 report details a large Hollenbeck barn fire at a Grun dy county farm. Twelve valuable horses perish and the hired man disappears, with authorities suspecting arson to cover a robbery as investigators comb the ruins for clues.
The Policeman's Protective Association of Illinois plans its annual gathering in Elgin next Tuesday with a large delegate presence from Joliet and Chicago. Local officials will send three delegates and several members travel independently. A parade banquet and dance are planned, with press representatives invited to attend. Attendance is expected to exceed 250.
Eugene Harris, deputy coroner and assistant to William Wunderlich, resigns after purchasing the Matter Steam Dye House. He is currently out of the city on a gas excursion and will return later.
Elmer P. Redman family at 1205 Western Avenue heard a burglar trying to force entry around midnight last Tuesday. The would be intruder fled before entering the Rodman residence, evading capture despite a neighborhood search by Captain Corcoran and officers. Police say it may indicate a gang plans further thefts, and a close watch will be kept.
Joseph Kurcheck a 16 year old Bohemian American of Braidwood nearly drowned after diving from a dam on the island neck of the river. Half a hundred fishermen watched as the current swept him toward the shore where he was revived with help from bystanders including Joliet residents James Brady John Henneberry and M B Mulock.

Railroad engineers and attorneys report no questions about constructing a union depot in the city, marking a clear stance on the proposed structure.
Railroad representatives told Joliet’s Commercial club last night that union depot plans are bond to the city’s track elevation ordinance. They said no danger existed to the depot proposal and that the depot would be built as part of the contract between the city and railroads, with continued support from Rock Island and Michigan Central officials at a dinner.
About 1,500 attended the Woodcraft picnic at Electric Park Plainfield yesterday with A G Blakely as master of ceremonies and A O Aleshire lecturing on Woodcraft. The day featured singing by Master Platts dancing and a ball game in which Plainfield beat Joliet game details list winners in sprint and field events including Owens Jones Kellogg and Tuttle.
A party of twenty eight members of the Grand Army and Woman's Relief Corps traveled in the special car Louisiana to Dundee for the Kane County Veterans association reunion. Department Commander Hayes led the group with several named comrades and ladies. They will return this evening.
