The James G. Heggie boiler works in East Joliet is constructing one of the nation’s largest smokestacks for United States Smelting in Bingham Canyon Utah. The 230 foot tall tower weighs 240000 pounds with a 16 foot 6 inch diameter and a bell shaped bottom from 36 half inch steel plates. The project highlights Joliet’s warehousing prowess and will take about three months to complete with six railroad cars needed for transport to Utah.
The city administration under Mayor Crolius orders deep cuts across departments with about twenty five employees removed from city rolls including a dozen in the street department. Rumors claim ethnic bias but the mayor denies targeted discrimination saying discharged workers included a few Italians by chance. Boats run daily to Rock Run park.
Visiting grand officers of the Eastern Star and local chapter officers toured the prison yesterday afternoon by wagonette and were entertained at dinner. After the visit they boarded a train at Rock Island station bound for Chicago, with guests from Quincy Chicago and Jo Net.

A fire at the fair grounds this morning destroyed the lumbermen’s association house, forcing eight occupants to escape by climbing down a tree. Total loss estimated at 50,000 with the Union Baking Company concession inside incurring 8,000 in damages.

Washington dispatch notes Mrs. Roosevelt leaving for Oyster Bay this morning with the president expected to follow on July 2.
Attorney Jacob Ringer obtained an order from Judge Kohlsaat authorizing Receiver Day to sell office fixtures in Laidley & Company branch offices at Kankakee Paxton Champaign Urbana Tuscola Arthur Mattoon Danville Hoopeston. The Joliet mayor’s office fixtures are excluded as they belong to the mayor. The receiver must turn over twenty Amalgamated Copper stock certificates to Harris & Wilmarth. Special appraisers Frank McKey Murray B. Louer and G. W. Smith were appointed.
Funeral for Frank McCarney, one of two youths killed near Lockport Sunday night, was held at 9 a.m. at St. Marys church with a large turnout and a touching sermon. He is buried in Mt. Olivet cemetery. James McGraw’s body was shipped to Worcester, Massachusetts, for burial.
Miss Katherine Langdon hosted a dinner and shower for Minnie Schall at 105 Francis Street to celebrate her upcoming June 29 marriage to John Hills. Pink and white decor, a four course dinner, gifts, games, and a souvenir kept guests entertained. Attendees included Minnie Schall and several other local women. Finest boating and bathing at Electric Park advertised.
Chicago June 24 Uncle Joe Cannon is a sick man. He refused to yield to a malarial fever said to afflict him. His daughter and physicians rushed him to his Danville home by special car. If his illness worsens an ocean voyage will be tried. He has been unwell for some time, and the convention’s excitement hastened his condition.
Aldermen led by Mayor Crolius and City Engineer Stevens traveled to Chicago by Rock Island to study track elevation. The delegation included Aldermen Kennelly Boylan Lagger Walsh Gray and Keltie along with editors Brewster and Ferriss. They aimed to gather information on closed streets and right of way to inform a local proposition at an upcoming special meeting.
A Plainfield outing at Electric Park drew an estimated 3 000 attendees with continuous crowds from morning through evening. Grocers and butchers missed the event due to absence from the city while races and other amusements provided entertainment for the holiday crowd.

The Illinois Supreme Court reversed a Chicago and Alton case against Kelly remanding it. Michel Kelly as administrator pursued $4,000 verdict with McNaughton and Brown representing parties. Obituaries record Patrick Tierney of Troy township near Joliet aged 86 with funeral rites at St Patrick’s church and burial in St Patrick’s cemetery. Jos Py aged 68 with funeral at Sacred Heart church and interment in St Patrick’s cemetery. The text also recounts Electric Park picnic events with races, dancing, boating, and a large Saturday crowd along the Des Plaines river.
Mrs. E P Martin presents a vocal pupil recital at the Talcott residence on Western avenue. Albert Hindle and Mrs Martin perform duets and groups with praise for the voice production method. Miss Louise Morrison and others receive enthusiastic notices as the program unfolds with several encores.
Springfield reports claim the Partello convict labor decision does not touch the labor law in question. The case seeks to strike the act as unconstitutional, arguing governor edits to the bill after engrossment and signature altered penalties. Separate federal action may proceed if the court accepts the challenge.
A large party from the Jerome Hunting and Fishing Club leaves Joliet for Mercer Wisconsin this evening. Prominent members including Sheriff J H Ray Postmaster J T Clyne Congressman H M Snapp and others join from Joliet Wilmington and Chicago for a several week trip to the Mercer area for musky pike and lake fishing.

The funeral for Alice May Woods occurred yesterday afternoon from 100 Winston Avenue home of M. B. Goodspeed with burial at Oakwood. Relatives and friends attended at 2 PM as Dr A H Laing offered tribute. Music by a quartet accompanied the service. Pallbearers included J H Garnsey Co H Dibell H T Patterson Dr Harry Potter Guy M Learnard Fred A Hill Harless King F H Wilson.
