A local grocer reports a fraud involving a customer who passed a counterfeit check for a groceries bill. The incident ends with the suspect named Murphy losing $19 in the scam. The case highlights caution against check forgeries in ordinary transactions.
A South Chicago street grocer, Turns Murphy, was duped when a stranger used a forged Joliet National Park check for 322 dollars to buy 3 dollars worth of groceries. The crook claimed delivery to 804 South Ottawa but the address turned out to be vacant. Police seek other victims as they pursue the check shower case.
Judge Dorrance Dibbetto chosen presiding justice of the Second District appellate court for the term at Ottawa. Opening day includes Fox v City of Joliet, the slough drain case. Original trial awarded $1,200 to the plaintiff, reversed on appeal, new trial ordered. Second trial awarded $800, city appeals again. Case set for appellate review with further action to follow.

Rev Joseph C Dent delivered the address to Joliet Conservatory of Music graduates as thirty pupils received diplomas in music at the final commencement in the Auditorium Despite storm the program drew music lovers The Conservatory has grown to 5650 students with a Morris branch and more graduates than the prior two years Walter W Hildy Elisabeth Harmening and Haille Katz gave notable piano performances Miss Salle Maud Young Louise Parr Luella Shipman and others received strong notices The faculty performances also showcased the talent of the school
Appellate and Circuit Judge Dor rance Dibell County Judge George J. Cowing and Assistant City Attorney Daniel R. Burke will form the local delegation to the State Bar association convention in Peoria tomorrow and Friday. Judge Dibell was invited to speak but could not prepare due to heavy workload. The Klein murder case may go to the jury by tomorrow allowing Judge Campbell to take up the chancery docket Friday. Reverend Thomas B. O'Brien received citizenship papers today. W. J. Quan & Co. filed an action in County court to replevin against Sheriff Harry C. Williams for $300 in merchandise.
Austin Roberts civil engineer son of Samuel H Roberts expected to land in Joliet tonight after months in Brazil. He will spend the summer in Joliet to help his health return from the tropical climate. Roberts is brother of Chester Roberts who recently finished at Annapolis.
The Ladies of the Grand Army announce a reception in Castlehall's green room on Friday honoring new department commander General P. C. Hayes. Banquet at 8, followed by addresses, music, and performances by Daughters of Liberty Drill team and vocal solos by Mrs E A Carver and Miss Pearl Hardy.
T. V. Brennan drafts a large portion of the Notre Dame college team for his Illinois Steels. With Conley arriving the roster grows. Conley may depart but pressure mounts to keep the college man alongside Tom Bothwicky. Stars Bert Daniels Kelly and McCarthy from Bt. Viateurs join the galaxy.

Private Jeceak B. Klein, a state militiaman, was found not guilty in the Earl Nelson slaying during the Springfield riots. Judge C B Campbell praised Klein, playing on his patriotic service and absence of discipline infractions, while urging jurors to see the accident as not a willful murder.
