Hatless and ragged the man who fired on town officers is captured after a brief pursuit as daylight fades and nature gives out. Authorities report the suspect was located in a corn field following a tense chase through nearby properties.
A hungry, teetering man found near Orland and Lemont gave the name Price and refused further details. He was subdued after a brief pursuit by local officers aided by Morris Kettering Grange and later taken to Cook County hospital with stimulants. Authorities questioned if he is a fugitive or possibly a man named Thomas, but he does not match that description.
Fireman John F. Ruddy of No 2 Engine House, brother of Assistant Fire Marshal Thomas Ruddy, sustained a broken leg when a runaway wagon on Division Street sent horses stamping and capsizing the wagon. Deliverman Fred Kinnet escaped injury as Ruddy was thrown to the pavement and taken home for care. The pole drop caused the dash, and the injury will sideline him for some time.
Thenekiah Marshall an African American man, attacked Miss Laura Yowell in Virden, fled a mob of Green Ridge miners at a Chicago and Alton freight yard, and after a gun duel hid successfully. Deputies later captured Marshall in Carlinville without resistance.
The Rockdale village board postponed street improvement decisions until a sidewalk ordinance is drafted and adopted. An alley committee will hire an engineer to map sidewalk grades. A concrete sidewalk ordinance will be prepared, marshal salaries were raised, Dr. Struczynski named health officer, dog licensing enforcement begins, and a drunken individual was removed by the marshal after disrupting the meeting.
The Joliet Caledonian club hosts the Highland Fling at Theiler's Park on Thursday July 29. A program of clan sports is planned with a band of twenty bagpipers arranged by Robbie Holmes. MM. R.
