Child Struck by Train Near Birds Bridge
Donna Filkin 12, daughter of Mr and Mrs Filkin of Chicago, was killed Saturday when she wandered onto the Birds Bridge ties as a Sunday school picnic passed. The engineer said the stop came too late after sighting the child on the curve. The family’s bereavement is reported by the Pere Marquette line crew and coroner Wunderlich.

Santa Fe Train Derails After Wheel Slip
A Santa Fe limited train derailed near the North Yards in California after leaving the rails. The entire train slid onto its side Saturday night, with hundreds of feet of cars off track. No injuries are specified in the report.

The derailment occurred about 9:30 p.m. with three cars overturning after the engine left the track.
