Joliet public schools vote 4 to 3 to appoint C. E. Spicer as superintendent starting July 1 at $1,500 yearly. Mrs. Henderson is removed after a move by Marshall Mason Hayes Carpenter against Henderson with Higgins Phelps Banzer opposing the change. The board adopts new teacher salary scales and approves numerous teacher appointments for the next school year, with 157 eighth graders graduating.
Pupils of Reed school on Ex change street, guided by Miss Adeline M. Stephen, delivered an acclaimed display at last night’s program in Gunn chapel Prairie avenue. The crowded audience, including parents and friends, applauded each number as School Director Brayton praised pupils and teacher for high standards.
A long list of acts including songs recitations and dances led by Lenora Stephen Esther Reed and Irene Brayton with performances from Nellie Harris Bessie Ackley Clara Brayton and Rosie Knutson among others. Vocal solos duets and pantomimes feature pieces from The Fisherman and His Child The Little Rag Doll and You Stay at Home in Your Own House. The event closes with a parting chorus and encore Tea Party.
Negotiations continue between Diamond Match Company representatives and sanitary district trustees over leasing drainage channel water power at Lockport and Joliet. A tentative 50 year lease at 5 per horsepower was discussed, with 2.50 per hp to the board and 2.50 to a sinking fund, yielding 50 000 annually for interest and later purchase at cost.
