Chicago June 16 1908 the Republican National Convention opened with Chairman Harry S New presiding Senator J C Burrows named temporary chairman while committees formed Taft Knox and Sherman figures stirred the crowd as delegates canvassed states for officers and vice presidency amid a Taft backed push in a city alive with color and bands

Hartong Gambler Pays Fire Of 300 In County Court

Clinton M. Hartong proprietor of the gambling rooms at 326 Jefferson Street pleaded guilty to operating a gaming house and was fined 100 dollars and costs on three counts totaling 300 dollars. Don Burton and Pierce Burbeck, State informants say are Hartong employees and not otherwise interested. Several saloon keepers were fined 20 dollars on two Sunday counts for keeping places open. Other informations were nailed or dismissed as cases closed. Dance at Electric Park scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

Local Elks to Travel in a Special Coach

John M. Collins leads a Joliet Elks delegation heading to the national convention in Dallas Texas in a special coach. Aurora and Elgin Ellis join Mayor Cronin as delegates to the Denver Democratic Convention prior to Dallas with Police Chief William F. McMasters and Charles Mack along for the trip.

Building Plan Sought for Fire Damaged Boston Street Site

David Weiner seeks an immediate building permit to replace the burned Boston store at 219-223 Jefferson street with a modern fireproof structure. The measure was made a special order of business as Alderman Leach urged amendments and the plan moved through the fire committee before city engineers.

Alderman Proposes Changes to Building Ordinance

Capital storage is $125,000 and sections 30 to 34 of the Seventh ward proposal are targeted for change. Alderman Leach argues removals for improvement are too strict and seeks amendments to sections 36 77 and 86. A majority of aldermen have studied the measure and may advance action Friday night to resolve the five year delay.

Capital $125000 with $160000 of books and $25000 to fund assets and equipment. The venture plans to offer title guarantees act as trustees executors guardians and enter as a first class trust company, with officers to be elected and location undetermined.

Joliet Drill Team Secures Second in Woodcraft Meet

In Peoria on June 16 the Joliet Forester drill team led by Captain F W Pearson finished second to Topeka Kansas with scores 98.14 to 98.64. The Woodcraft gathering drew 31 senior teams as the head camp opened its session slated to run through next Saturday.

Convict Kaiser Captured Hiding in Hedgerow Near Marley

After escaping from the penitentiary quarry, James Kaiser alias Joseph Kaiser eluded pursuit about twelve hours. He was found at 9 p.m. hiding in a hedgerow on Edward Martin farm near Marley by Prison Guard Rawley and returned to the guard house in prison garb. A farmer, Daniel Laussen, spotted the gray prison suit as Kaiser ran, triggering a coordinated pursuit by guards.

Old-Time Friend to Visit Joliett Area Dance Nights

F H Metealf of Los Angeles and formerly of Joliett Plainfield will visit the area. He plans to attend dances at Electric Park on Tuesday and Thursday evenings before leaving home for a short time.
