City council adjourned after limited business as heat lingered. A seven member committee from each ward was named to appoint a plumbing inspector and blueprints for water main and sewer projects were reviewed.
Special to The Republican from St Paul June 10 describes a fast Chicago to St Paul train ride, a Minneapolis stopover, and Camp Stevenson. Delegates favor Grand Rapids Michigan for the convention city over Indianapolis. Tuesday meeting opens at 9 with state decisions this afternoon. Northcott re elected head consul Hawes head clerk Kerns re elected Illinois head physician. several directors to retire. Reily and Hopkins seek seats. Illinois likely to gain one director. reserve fund action deferred. Dr Thomas Electro Oil ads appear.
Local Joliet shops unveil eye catching window displays. C F Pinneo showcases a Palmolive soap arrangement with royal purple and olive hues. Calmer & Son adopt severe simplicity with mannequins. Dinet & Co installs large plate mirrors and new center vases to highlight shoes and hosiery.
St Mary’s parochial school in 1900 1901 reported an average enrollment of 473 and attendance near 934 percent. Three deaths from scarlet fever occurred among students. A boys choir debuted on Master Sunday and a large number of promotions occurred. A sewing class for girls added to regular work. Fifty four students entered first holy communion and about 200 prepared for confirmation. An exhibit of school work is planned in St Mary’s hall next Sunday.
Miss Wolf's room at Richards Street School maintained first place in punctuality and attendance most of the year with only five months not at top. The class celebrated with a Dellwood picnic, riding a street car and enjoying a dainty lunch on a pleasant afternoon.
I V Park urges harmony and coordinated action to expand Joliet within extended corporate limits and higher assessments. He favors abolishing township government via boundary extension, calls for B M A and newspapers to unite, and for censorship to curb discord as The Republican pushes larger Joliet for lower taxes. The younger pupils of Prof J Wallace Spears performed an evening musical at Mrs Shaffner’s Sherman Street home. Miss Sadie Balchowsky and Hazel Goodspeed received strong applause for mandolin and recitations, with a varied program of waltzes, schottishes, and melodies led by teacher Alfred Greenboam.
Sixteen teams competed in the Union Club weekly whist practice last evening. Twenty four boards of progressive average whist were played with north and south averaging 155 and east and west 157. The score details follow.
Joliet schools honor Miss Eliza Kelly principal of Joliet street school who served 37 years without absence. Board adopted resolutions praising her loyalty and fidelity and ordered a copy to the family. May payroll approved and May attendance reported. Graduation plans for eighth grade set for June 13 at township high school.
Father Sherman, son of Civil War General, spoke at St Marys church in Joliet Sunday night. His sermon to the League of the Sacred Heart drew a large crowd and was praised as eloquent. The piece ends with an advertisement for Wolf Hatter in Chicago Street offering new yacht and golf styles.
Captain George Eberhart, longtime Joliet figure, stopped in the city while on leave from Co. D at the National Home for Disabled Volunteers in Danville. He came from Germany in 1852 and fought with Co. I, Twentieth Illinois in the Civil War. He later served on Joliet police under Mayor Kelly.
