Senger Train Narrowly Escapes Grand Collision

A Chicago and Alton passenger train northbound near Van Buren Street ran wild after air failure. Engineer David Blomington halted it. Trumble and switch crew prevented a wreck at Jefferson crossing. One injuries reported and passengers narrowly escaped a disaster.

Hostler Injured Battling Vicious Stallion Near Manhattan

Carl Johnson, a hostler at John C. Bakers stock farm near Manhattan, dragged by a stallion for hundreds of feet, suffered a fractured skull and an eye gouged out. He underwent surgery at St. Joseph's Hospital and faced a coma with a fighting chance to recover, while the valuable horse valued at $2000 was restrained.

The funeral for the late J W Ducker was held from his mother's home on Union Street Priday at 4 PM with Rev Harry W Reed of St John s Universalist Church officiating. Interment followed at Oakwood with pallbearers Louis Pohl F W Wirtz I W Ramsey Fred Francis J S Botts and Fred Watt.

Wife Sues Husband After Window Assault and Cruelty

Mrs Annie McCarthy files in Circuit Court seeking an injunction against her husband Timothy McCarthy over a May 31 separation following an alleged attempt to throw her from a window. She accuses him of beating her, driving her from home, and cites long-term alcohol abuse and cruelty. They have two children, Roy and Lester, and custody is sought. McCarthy is listed as a foreman at Hunots Steel Co.

No agreement reached with street car company on Cass Street bridge

Highway commissioners met General Manager J R Blackhall of the Chicago and Joliet Electric Railway Co over the Cass Street bridge spanning Spring Creek. No definite outcome emerged though Blackhall would submit the issue to directors. He believes the company will resist any demand to pay for repairs or relocation.

Golfers Enjoy First Nine Hole Round at Country Club

About fifty golfers turned out last Saturday to play nine holes at the Country club. The heat was high but play remained fair and no records were set. Groundskeeper George M. Campbell reported four loads of hay harvested from the course as mowing continues for A-1 condition by next week.

The Joliet Bottling Co sues Joliet Citizen's Brewing Co for breach of contract alleging owed damages of 100000. Circuit court trial opens before Judge Marshall with extensive legal representation and jury selection continuing. The dispute stems from the brewing firm's refusal to supply beer due to alleged noncompliance with settlement terms.

Joliet Crack Drill Team to Compete in Peoria Event

Joliet's crack drill team, three time first prize winner and national champions, will compete at Peoria next week during the Modern Woodmen of America head camp events. The team recently recovered from a winter setback after Robesson hall fire. Peoria expects 6000 Woodmen. Joliet will send delegates with 1500 tents to be erected for the gathering.

Peculiar Case Surrounds Joliet Death Burial

Walter J. Peel died in a collision between a Joliet & Southern Traction Co. car and a train. His son, John W. Peel of Nashville Washington County, disputed a La Grange woman’s claim to be his wife and sole beneficiary. A will found in Peel's notebook left all to the son. The service was at Chamberlin's undertakers with Rev. Dr. Thomas W. Rector officiating.
