Orr plans deepwater canal from Lake Borgne to Cairo

Captain Robert Orr proposes a canal project linking Lake Borgne south of New Orleans to the Mississippi at Cairo. The plan envisions a 200 feet wide, 30 plus feet deep, below surface channel with a two tenths foot per mile grade and sections from Borgne to Baton Rouge, Natchez, Yazoo, Memphis, and Cairo. The effort seeks a $50 million congressional appropriation and would use excavated material for banks and levees.

Short County Board Session Amid Light Agenda

The coming county board session will be brief with little business likely. Members meet Monday at 2 pm and adjourn until Tuesday morning. Bills, semi annual county officer reports, tax refunds, and bridge petitions will be considered.

Substantial funds sought for Joliet waterway fund

A seven member committee led by S D Chaney began a campaign to raise 2000 for deep waterway work. Subscriptions will be collected at the Wild County National Bank by treasurer Charles H Talcott as plans for a regional waterway meeting in Joliet proceed.

New York City Corporation Counsel William B. Ellison files Supreme Court suits to cancel gas company franchises and permits. Actions name Consolidated Gas Company and allied firms to bar mains and pipes from streets with injunctions sought. defendants have twenty days to answer, with possible temporary restraining orders.

Frank White Seeks To Take Girl Away From Family

Frank White attempts to reclaim his thirteen year old daughter Edna from her aunt Mrs. Fuhrmann of Jefferson street. Edna avoids him at school. grandmother oversees two younger siblings. Authorities hesitate to act as Edna attends school and appears well cared for. The case could go to court if pursued.

Vandalism Reported At Highland Park Boat Resort

Witnesses say unidentified persons believed to be tied to Highland Park officials moved an engine house at the resort Thursday night. They seized cars and used boats, later losing some oar locks. The claim of lifting the engine house is supported by gathered information.

White pleads guilty in county court for petit larceny

Charles White a self confessed check shover and forger pleaded guilty in the county court to petit larceny. He received twenty days in jail and a $1 fine per count. He has served time and is in Chicago with his wife seeking release. The circuit court forgery case may be nolle pressed. Clemency was granted for testimony aiding prosecutions of a large check forgery gang. White warned of possible retaliation by gang members. Other gang members remain jailed on related charges.

Spanish War Veterans Hold Fourth Illinois Encampment at Aurora

The Spanish War Veterans of Joliet are well represented at the Fourth Annual encampment in Aurora. A banquet at the Aurora Coliseum featured Senator Hopkins and other notables. Rain delayed plans but parade and festivities proceeded with entertainment and speeches praising Civil War and Spanish War deeds.

Truce With Gasco Ends Next Tuesday In Joliet

The two week truce between Joliet and Western United Gas & Electric ends Tuesday. Mayor Cronin believes the company has no rights in Joliet streets and hints at court action after negotiations fail. State's Attorney Heise will file information in Circuit Court this summer with a September hearing planned.

Coal Train Wreck Near Sag Bridge Causes Detours

A broken wheel derailed ten coal cars on the Alton line near Sag Bridge yesterday afternoon. A long stretch of track on both directions was torn up. No injuries were reported and trains diverted to the Santa Fe route until late last night.

Ladies Granted Smoke-Free Seating At Dellwood Park

The middle section of the Dellwood ball park grandstand will be reserved for ladies and smoking is banned there. Management says the move gives ladies freedom from smoke while attending games.

Track Elevation Committee Meets to Plan Funds

The Rock Island county track elevation committee met and organized with Anson W. Flexer as chair and Supervisor Jump as secretary. A $50,000 payment to the company for removing tracks from the courthouse square was set for 1908, to be raised by assessments over two years. The panel will seek Rock Island officials’ visit and bids for sidewalk repairs around the courthouse.
