President Gompers of the AFL condemns Colorado Governor Peabody for provoking bitterness in the labor crisis. In Cripple Creek martial law is proclaimed as miners are deported and searched. Miners face daily deportations, arrests, and vigilante actions while authorities pledge to flush out Federation of Miners members.
The report notes generally fair weather tonight and Thursday with northeast winds. A thermometer in Joliet shows 80 degrees high and 55 degrees low in the past 24 hours.
A broken brake beam on a west bound Rock Island freight narrowly avoided a wreck near Eastern avenue yesterday morning. The front portion failed, dragging rails as the rear half crossed, while heavily loaded refrigerator cars jumped the beam without derailing, sparing a repeat of a past mass pile up despite dramatic water spurts from the damaged cars.
The Humane Society was organized at a meeting last night with officers elected: President Mrs Charles Stewart Vice President Mrs Godley Treasurer Prof Dy H Darling Secretary Mrs W B Long. Sixteen new members joined and plans to affiliate for legal standing and distinct status from the Cat club. The society will appoint an agent to report cruelty cases to authorities and fund fines. Next meeting at The News on Tuesday evening June 14.
Mr and Mrs T Benton Collins of Manistee Michigan announce the marriage plans for their daughter Sugabelle Collins to Frank Humphrey Burnett. The wedding will be at 6 o'clock on June 22 at 5M Third Street residence. Burnett is son of Mr and Mrs W S Burnett and resides in Buffalo New York. Miss Collins is a known figure in town and has connections with Clara Case on Manhattan road. The couple will reside in Buffalo after September 1. The Stephenson bedding will take place tomorrow at 4 o'clock at Central Presbyterian church.
Ivan Bosic was fined for shooting at a neighbor's chickens after a dispute over the birds. The incident led to legal action and a monetary penalty.
The editor notes rapid Baptist expansion in the Seventh ward with new structures on Eastern Avenue and a planned Second Avenue building. Foundations are being laid for a church on Union, marking a period of active church construction in the area.
Township high school board members heard Supt. Brown praise a satisfactory year with strong teacher cooperation and good student attendance. Dan Brodrick of Braidwood defies courts after pleading guilty to striking neighbor Thomas Pletrazsak. Justice Nichols fined him ten dollars and costs, which Brodrick refuses to pay and remains jailed. James and John Smith are jailed on theft charges from Marcus Krakar and await trial before Justice Nichols on Thursday.
Edith M Richards Ruthven born August 15 1874 in Illinois died May 13 1904 after a life of faith. She married Duncan Ruthven June 15 1898 and left three children. Funeral in El Campo with Rev Dr Story and hymns. Burial at Escampo cemetery amid floral tributes and community mourning.
Fidelity Council No 3 Order of the White Cross hosted a reception for supreme officers and their wives and Fidelity Council No 3 Lockport members at Castle hall. Officers and guests attended in a body with honors and speeches followed by contributions from several ladies and gentlemen.
John May, a motorneer injured in the Cass street collision, lies in a sadashens condition at Silver Cross hospital after surgery by Drs Peakrs and Abell. Blood clots were removed. his recovery is uncertain in the next days. Frank Bossom, a Michigan Central switchman also hurt, is improving at St Josephs and may be discharged by early next week.
The district four closing exercises at the schoolhouse on Monday June 6 featured prizes for general excellence. Honored pupils include Walter Wilhelmi Richard Reimer Jennie Freeze Raymond Wilhelmi Arthur Watsziak and Gordon Edmunds. The program showcased multiple recitations songs and a final chorus. the teacher Missip eh ied presented the eloge of the event noting Arthur Comstock's return from the state university at Champaign for summer vacation.
John Gilligan reports a spring fever theft of $96 after meeting Ella Jones on the railroad tract. Jones, a parolee, was found at H. A. Anderson's home with $35 recovered. partner Butch Thompson was arrested for disorderly conduct. Gilligan says he has reformed.
Miss Verna Kilgore graduates at Silver Cross training school married Tuesday night at 8 at the first M. EB. church in Oak Park. Rev. Hall officiated before about 200 guests with a reception in the red parlors. Joliet guests included Misses Robison Darby Ming Stevens and others.
The class of 1904 won the annual track meet at Ingalls Park with top honors by Shaw and McFadden who took first and second in individual events. Records fell across events as Brummond and Giffin set marks in hammer and half mile with strong wind and rain delaying proceedings but not dampening competition.
