A poem evokes Civil War sacrifice as soldiers fall in a storm of battle. The speaker laments lost liberty while narrating drums, banners, and the raising of a northern flag, ending with a vow that the martyrs lie in green graves and the emblem remains free.
The Weatherary reports fair tonight and probably Wednesday with variable winds. Joliet thermometer shows 67 degrees high and 55 degrees low in the past twenty four hours.
The mayor submitted parts of his annual report after track elevation discussion, with several items approved. Street work includes sidewalks on Van Buren Richmond Ottawa and Joliet areas with grade ordinances, license transfers for dramshops, and approval of Sterling Boiler claim minus credits. The Megde water works revision bill was referred back, and Alderman Spears was the only absentee.
Phineas Barnes aged 62 died at his Pittsburg home after a years long illness. A pioneer in modern steel manufacture, he worked with leading industry figures and helped design Jones & Laughlin works. Born January 10 1849 in Portland Missouri, he trained at Troy Polytechnic Institute class of 1867. Survived by wife Fanny Ellsworth Wood and three children Gladys Barnes Harold Barnes and Mrs Watson. Funeral at Calvary Episcopal East End at 3 30 Wednesday. burial in Allegheny Cemetery.
A crash at 8:40 last night at the KE J and E grade crossing on East Cass street injured seven, two seriously, when an eastbound electric car was struck by a string of box cars being backed into the J yard by a Michigan Central engine. Motorneer Mau, crushed beneath wreckage, was rescued after heroic effort but for a time not expected to live.
At 9 o'clock this morning the district neared normal as troops and deputies secured order. Sheriff Bell ordered citizens to go unarmed or face arrest. Casualties from yesterday's explosion and rioting total twenty nine, with fifteen dead and fourteen wounded. Vigilance committee seeks unionists for detention awaiting deportation. Governor Peabody may declare martial law upon his return.
A Tokyo telegram reports Russian forces at Port Arthur intend a joint move with Kuropatkin to counter the Japanese threat. Tokyo dispatches an entire army contingent to Dalny and Kinchow, with about 200000 troops expected within two weeks.

Property owners urge city council to amend track elevation rules to allow a fourteen foot clear subway at the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific crossing Desplaines street. The petition lists many signatories led by Julius Krause senior and other local residents and firms.
C F Jensen and Carl Fricke left yesterday for New York and will sail on the Deutschland Thursday for a trip to the old country, returning in early fall. C H Christensen will run Jensen's business during absence. The count insists the voyage include a brass band and orchestra on board.
Five year old Gordon McGinnis, son of Rev and Mrs George McGinnis, is seriously ill after a lime burn. He developed a high fever with swelling and pain in the burned hand and arm. The accident happened while he played in the Union street lot where a new Christian church is being built.
Henry Taylor, described as a one armed colored man, was arrested after a running confrontation with police near the Union elevator. He was shot at twice before cuffed. A white 14 year old boy from Kenosha, Wisconsin names Hugh Duffin accuses the man of coercive immoral acts. Taylor denies the charges and says he is being persecuted for his color while both are held at the station.
The Church of St. Boniface in Chicago was dedicated with elaborate ceremonies. Rev. Hausser serves as assistant priest and Rev. Keiley of St. Mary’s Joliet attended, noting Hausser’s past work and popularity at his former parish.
Charles G. Bowman of this city was chosen to give the class poem at Valparaiso Indiana last week. The poem pleased the audience and was well received for its clever writing and local hits. Bowman is an experienced writer who has published a volume titled Local Poems. The verses are generally college poems, bright and rhythmical.
The Joliet Swedish Temperance society holds its monthly meeting tonight at the Swedish Baptist church with officer elections for the coming year and reports to be read. Professor C G Wallentus of Chicago will lecture on temperance.
