Eyewitness and section foreman described the fatal car wreck yesterday. Dramatic testimony emerged at the inquest into the lives lost, detailing the moment of impact and the conditions surrounding the crash.
William Shann 20 and William Stalter 27 died when westbound freight No 11 derailed near Spencer Crossing a mile east of Brisbane. Stalter died after relief train arrived. Shann died instantly. Inquest held at Wunderlich Undertaking rooms revealed fragile hopes and dramatic testimony from witnesses including conductor Alleut and section foreman De Weese.
Six saloon-keepers were fined ten dollars plus costs in Magistrate BE Allen's court for defying an 11 o'clock closing order. Deputies Connors and Hennessy served warrants as witnesses paid or promised fines. Names listed include James Byrnes Steve Olha Martin Bros and A ed Le Miller with others paying later.

Alex Cohen a peddler living at 612 Desplaines street alleges he was robbed by George Yard's a travelling horse dealer after an altercation over swapping a horse near the Trainer store on South Jo Net street corner of Allen. Cohen says his pocketbook was taken. Yard's arraignment is expected tomorrow morning.
Louis Zupac, 42, an Austrian arrival from Cleveland, Ohio, grew violent in North Chicago Street and was taken into custody. Supervisor John R. Herath said he will be sent back to Ohio as he is not a county ward. Police found $92 on him and he claimed a wife and family in Cleveland at 8908 East Saint Clair Street.
The alderman protests a $5,800 buy for an extension ladder and chemical truck claiming the itemization is not properly redded and the matter is ongoing.
Bartleson post of the Grand Army plans a memorial service for Daniel F Higgins at Brown church cemetery in Jackson. Automobiles will assemble at Capt James G Elwood's office at 9 30 a m with a procession to the cemetery at 10 30 a m. Reverend Isaiah Villary of New Lenox will deliver the address. Higgins 59, a long time post member, entered service at fifteen and served through the war. Some automobile owners may contribute Sunday for veterans transport and will receive letters of thanks from the post.
The Merchants association will meet tomorrow at 9 AM to discuss the Ingalls Park fair. They will review booth plans and wedding arrangements while awaiting premium lists and fair programs. Secretary Schager requests members send checks with receipts for accounting statements.
The annual Ep worth League convention of the Joliet district will open in Morrison on Friday and run three days. The Friday and Saturday sessions will feature the ablest church speakers of the middle west.
On motion of Alderman King the superintendent of streets was directed to raise crosswalks at Henrystreet and Baker avenue and to build a cross walk at Collins and Van Buren. Streets department is to clean gutters on Collings street and top-dress Van Buren from Herkimer to Collins and to level AM, Kert and Wilson streets.
A New York man known as Scot or related alias allegedly pursued relationships with men met recently and claimed connections to a popular merchant, prompting fraud allegations and cautions about confidence schemes.
Thomas Ruddy assistant marshal of the fire department and Chief Frank Langdon were duped by a suave stranger posing as a relative of James Brownell. The man convinced Ruddy to vouch for him at the Joliet National Bank leading to a large check that proved worthless. Brownell, now in New York, denies any relation, and the impostor fled with Brownell’s name, leaving authorities in pursuit.
Paulek Roach, a river farmer, bought a horse in the city from trader James. The horse proved unsound, the trader demanded a refund, Roach refused, and Judge Ned Allen mediated a settlement that returned the money. Mc Phillips used most of it in a nearby saloon, restoring peace.
George J. Arbelter named appraiser in the estate of George Hamblin of Lockport, subject to inheritance tax. An information filed against Carl Oliver in County Court charges him with running a gambling house. In Circuit Court, the case brought by Lorenzo Retts against Andrew Lindemeyer was filed today seeking $500 damages. Schmit & Marcotti of Kankakee are attorneys.
May 1909 stands uniquely in weather history with a May earthquake the first since records began. Muhlig notes quake timing around May 5 to 6 and record cold compared to 1907. May 1909 showed 15 clear days, 5 partly cloudy, 11 cloudy, and notable temperature shifts.
The city began repairing Jefferson street pavement with vitrified brick set on sand after cutting out broken sections. Mayor Cronin endorses the temporary fix as better than asphalt fills tried last year. Conway company previously repaired Collins street similarly, but results were unsatisfactory and resurfacing will be needed.
