Burglars Blow Safe at Standard Oil Office

Thieves used dynamite to blast a two ton safe at the Standard Oil Company office on East Cass Street. They escaped with cash rumored to exceed $100, leaving tools marked Fox behind and damaging the vault area amid a broken window and wall.

American Steel and Wire Secures New Mine in Mesaba

American Steel and Wire Company has nearly completed negotiations for control of a new Mesaba mine and acquired 3,500 acres of coking coal lands in Germany township Pennsylvania. The move aims to supply its own coke and grant independence from local markets, with ovens under construction to prevent shortages. The mine also provides a mixing ore grade crucial to its wire production and could enable the company to enter ore sales if needed, though it will not sell coke.

Assessor Morrison and assistants tally 273 new or under way houses in Joliet Township 183 in the city and 90 outside. Vacant houses total 22 with 12 in the city and 10 outside. The detailed breakdown lists new and vacant counts by district and side of town.

Encouraging Reports From Y M C A Woman’s Auxiliary Meeting

The Woman’s Auxiliary of the Y M C A held its annual meeting at Mrs. J. H. Ferriss home in Bush Park. Attendance was solid as officers were elected led by President Miss Minnie E. Hawley and Treasurer Mrs. J. H. Ferriss. Donations exceeded one hundred dollars with a five dollar debt balance to be paid to close the books. Members discussed expanding the roll to include jobless workers and adding daytime and associate classes to broaden support. A social hour followed with thanks to the men’s reception committee.
