Governor Deneen Welcomed by Monster Crowds in Joliet

Governor Charles S. Deneen arrived in Joliet from Chicago to a cheering crowd outside the court house. He then led a wide caravan through Lockport New Lenox Frankfort and Crete to Steger for a birthday celebration amid dust and enthusiastic townspeople.

Shaw Takes Third in Olympic 110 Meter Hurdles

Arthur Shaw finished third in the 110 meter hurdles at the Olympic Games. Smithson won in a world record 15 seconds with Garrells second, Shaw narrowly beaten by Garrells at the tape. The race was praised as one of the greatest hurdles events and drew praise for Smithson and Garrells.

Quinn Re elected as Hibernians Treasurer in Indianapolis

John F. Quinn of Joliet was re elected treasurer of the Ancient Order of Hibernians for a two year term. Matthew Cummings of Boston was re elected president after a leadership fight with J. E. Dolan of Syracuse. The convention also elected James J. Reagan vice president J. T. McGinnis secretary and Quinn treasurer. The Ladies Auxiliary re elected its officers and created two new posts while debating salary increases.

Attempt to wreck 6000 flyer near Kendrick crossing

Unknown parties placed two heavy steel rails across the Denver flyer line at Kendrick crossing, one mile east of Piano. An east bound extra freight under Engineer Winchell of Galesburg struck the rail averted disaster as the passenger train followed. The crash bent the rail and threw it aside, likely saving many lives.

Chautauqua Baseball Opens During Afternoon Game

Yesterday afternoon the Chautauqua baseball season began with the first game of the series. Early action featured the home squad taking the field as fans gathered for the opening event of the season.

Methodists and Encampment at New Lenox Next Month

Dellwood diamond hosts Eighth grade Lockport versus Joliet rivals. Lockport wins 3 to 1 after solid play by future stars. Chau tauqua assembly runs daily with games at 4 PM on the diamond. Fortnight religious meetings program issued.

Lemont Woman Recovers Stolen Horse and Buggy in Chicago

Mrs. Peter Kickles of Lemont identified her horse and buggy recovered in a West Side Chicago livery stable after a man attempted to sell the rig for fifty dollars. The thief was captured by police. Village Marshall Kane heads to Chicago to bring him back for trial. Kickles credited with aiding the force in tracing and recovering the property.

Joliet District F River Conference Camp Meeting

Indications point to a standout forty-second Joliet district camp meeting at New Lenox grounds August 20 to 28. Rev H Pooley outlines the official program with Will Pugsley as evangelist and Desplain es leader Prof Pugh directing music as dozens of district ministers head the effort to uplift congregations and Sunday schools.

City appoints James Corcoran as dog catcher

Mayor Cronin names James Corcoran dog catcher for the city. He started duties this week and will pursue unlicensed and roaming dogs. Only about 200 of 2500 dogs are licensed, prompting a strong campaign and more enforcement at the police station.
