The city faced a blistering heat wave with 95 degrees highest in official readings and near 99 unofficial. Laborers and steel workers suffered while some plants halted operations and one incident saw a man chase by an ax-wielding assailant. A storm later caused fires and widespread rain scattering crowds.
A thunderstorm delivering heavy rain overnight sparked a lightning strike at the South Side Saloon. Flash flood risk noted as locals report water intrusion and minor damage to interior fixtures. Fire department responded and ensured the scene was safe.
Jacob Solonco thirteen-year-old son of Mr and Mrs Jacob Solonco of 607 North Ottawa street drowned after cramps while attempting to swim the Des Plaines River from one bank to the other and back. Matt Kalich tried to save him and later recovered the body with a pike pole. Coroner Noel held an inquest. burial followed. A brother drowned two years earlier.
C. E. Robinson, recently elected president of the Carrier-Lowe Box company, has moved from the Auditorium office to the main Rockdale offices. After R. J. Carrier’s death, Robinson was named active head but has now left the downtown site with George M. Campbell for full-time duties. The Dellwood band presents a special German night Tuesday evening.
An intense electrical storm swept through Minooka area causing total destruction of Charles Perkins barn with twenty tons of hay and two horses, and another large barn owned by Charles Dirst was heavily damaged. Livestock perished and crops harmed as hail damaged fields nearby.
At a monster meeting of the Italian American Republican club in South Chicago Street headquarters the group unanimously endorsed George A Barr and Congressman Snapp for office. John M Danti club president spoke on antis and their misdeeds and called for weekly campaign meetings. Republican candidates were invited to attend next Sunday at 7 30 PM.
City Engineer Stevens and Acting Mayor Waters instruct Chief McMasters to curb vandals who destroy street signs as fast as Humphrey Company replaces them with new relics.
Mayor John R. Cronin and Robert Kelly returned from the Democratic convention in Denver with other Joliet delegates. Thomas Dawson arrived on a Santa Fe flyer. The mayor, fatigued by the trip, returned to Oneida street and may skip tonight’s council meeting.
Lightning damaged the Forest Park Sanitary district power facilities and cut lights for about an hour. In Lockport the bolt shattered the power house roof and wiring, but workers were not seriously injured. A report of a death was denied by Chief Engineer Edward B. Ellicott. The park kept spirits up with candles and band music as repairs began. A $1,500 reward is offered for park saboteurs. A memorial mass is planned at St Mary’s Church for Brother M W Kelly.
Joseph Grettsa age 19 of Chicago drowned in an abandoned Lemont quarry while visiting his cousin William Wagner. He slipped from a ledge into about 25 feet of water as his companions watched. Wagner attempted a rescue but failed before the body was recovered.
City engineers will forgo their summer vacations because of pressing municipal duties, a statement by H A Stevens says. Stevens recently returned from Macatawa Park Michigan where he and his family have a summer home. Also with Mrs Stevens are her sister Mrs George Tilton and her brother W J Thompson and Mrs Thompson of Prophetstown Illinois.
Rev. George McGinnis of Waukegan, formerly of Eastern Avenue Baptist, recalls being mistaken for Senator Hopkins at a union Sunday school picnic. A woman praised his family then confessed she stopped the Beacon over alleged abuse, prompting McGinnis to remark it is part of politics.
Editorial warns that the Legislative Voters’ League aims to disrupt Will and DuPage county Republican control by nominating three senatorial candidates, risking loss of representation. It urges Will County to back Heise and Hill as senatorial committeemen to counter interference and preserve party strength.
