At 3 a m yesterday guests at the Hotel Munroe in North Chicago were awakened by a chimney fire that required five fire companies but caused no damage. A blaze at the Schreffler villa followed by a couch fire in Mrs. Daley’s apartment caused about 30 dollars in damage and did not trigger a department response. The trash box fire behind the old post office on Jefferson Street was extinguished before damage. The causes remain unknown.
President Jordan of the Commercial club announced the selection of seven committees for the coming year. The 100,000 Club will transfer all plans and projects to a new Industrial Committee with an industrial agent serving as secretary. The list includes directors and chairs across house, auditing, membership, finance, whist, billiards, press, and industrial and deep waterway groups with numerous members named.
A second diphtheria case in the city was reported to the city health department this morning. The latest victim is Charles Sharpe of 900 Columbia Street. The note ends with a prompt to aldermen to read Section 7 of the proposed gas ordinance.
The Spring Creek Drainage commissioners speculate on when Michigan Central Railroad will begin excavation along the right of way from Washington Street to the north side of the Rock Island tracks. Contractor Robert Shannon reports progress near Washington Street and aims to complete the Cecil section by November 1.
Johnson was removed from St. Joseph's hospital to the House of the Good Shepherd in Chicago Saturday afternoon by Captain Martin Murphy of the Detective Department.
Morris January 27 Special to The Republican reports a deceased infant found in a shoe box at Rochelle railroad station was not murdered. The father says the child was dead at birth in Rockford hospital and was to be buried in Morris. He left the box at the depot and later learned of its disappearance while he traveled to Morris.
The local board of improvements met with Mayor Cronin present. Alderman Burke presented a report on the Ruby Street and Broadway water mains project with total net rebate of 5 897 20 after costs. Portland cement sidewalks were approved for Ruby street and Sherman street with estimated totals of 419 76 and 3 150 11 respectively. New assessment rolls were filed for Liberty street water main and Meeker avenue Collins street sewer system with costs of 3 645 75 and 7 726 71. Confirmation set for February 10 and 24 1908.
City council plans an executive session to review the finance committee budget and petitions for higher salaries. Mayor Cronin leads ward reps with Al Harney Lagger and Walsh finalizing recommendations after consultations with department heads.
