Constantine suicide at penitentiary after family money troubles

Coroner jury finds Frank Constantine died after leaping from the third tier of the penitentiary gallery as his mother’s alleged failure to secure funds for a pardon or parole drove him to end his life. Witnesses described his morose temper since September 28 and letters showing family pressure guiding his course.

Old Resident John Eaton Dies at 75 in Lockport

Special to the Republican reports John Eaton aged 75 died at his home in Lockport January 24. The obituary notes he lived in Lockport and passed away peacefully at home.

Family Survivor Noted in Brief Notice

A local obituary notice states a husband and one son Edwin survive the deceased. Funeral services are planned for Sunday afternoon at 2 30 o clock with interment in Lockport cemetery.

Busy Night for Local Fire Department Amid Cold Weather

Last night the local fire department handled at least three chimney fire alarms within a hour and a half. Defective flues caused roof and chimney fires at John McCabe 20014 Meeker Ave and Mrs Foley 1020 North Colling. both fires caused damage. A third call came from Dwight Casey 110 Hickory Street where an overturned heating stove caused a minor blaze and neighbors helped.

Drowned Chicago Youth Remembered in Court Action

The death of Eugene Darche a fifteen year old from Chicago drowned in a lagoon opposite Rock Ran park last July was recalled in Judge Hooper's court. Peter Pell plaintiff recovered the body and attorney Newhall questioned the use of his injured hand in the effort. Eyewitnesses are expected to testify about the rescue by Pell during a Chicago church picnic in the park.

Evelyn Johnson, actually Ermal, 22, from Elmwood, describes a night of wandering after work at 744 Desplaines, drinking at Liberty’s saloon with bartender Sandy and a man named George who expelled her as dawn neared. She was found unconscious near Railroad and McDonough streets and later recovered at St. Joseph’s hospital. relatives in Joliet plan to help.

Warden B J Murphy of the Illinois State penitentiary remains ill and cannot travel to Rockford for a scheduled Elks event. His condition is not serious, and the notice references a proposed gas ordinance.

Jury Fixes Damages At One Penny In Copper Case

In Circuit Court Judge Marshall's chamber, the jury found the defendant guilty and awarded one cent to Joseph Tuseck against John Plese for calling Tuseck a thief. After hours of deliberation the jury declared the unique verdict, aiming to restore honor and erase the stigma on Tuseck.

Swedish American Republican Club Plans Big Meeting

The Swedish American Republican League club in Loughton hall held a planning session to revive the group and expand its activity. A 25 member delegation and 25 alternates were chosen to attend the Aurora state convention on March 9. A future appearance by the state president Justus Johnson of Aurora was announced, with a large meeting and glee club from Aurora planned.

Serious accident at grade crossing near Michigan Central tracks

Mrs Dennis Murphy age unknown and her brother in law O Leary were seriously hurt when a switch engine pulling box cars struck their buggy near the Washington and Jefferson streets crossing in Michigan. Gates were not down and the collision overturned the buggy injuring both occupants. Mrs Murphy was taken home in a serious condition.
