Deneen Campaign Stop Draws 500 at Clement Hall

Governor Charles S. Deneen spoke to 500 voters at Clement Hall under Will County Republicans. He touted progress under his administration, highlighted reforms in state institutions, waterway plans and a proposed bond issue while urging support for his continued term.

Death of Traveling Salesman Joseph Frederick

Joseph E F Frederick aged 60 died suddenly at his home 536 West Marton street from heart trouble shortly before noon. Survived by wife Mrs Frederick and son Leonard a Beloit College student. Funeral arrangements pending Leonard’s arrival home. Frederick born Joliet, long resident, son of the late Joseph Frederick Kerr, a local pioneer.

5 UY Gets Fine for Stealing Lumber

Andrew Hinkle sixteen years old was fined twenty five dollars and costs by Police Magistrate Allen after a chase by Detective Saxon of the E J and E. He admitted involvement in lumber theft at the E d yards while several other youths, unnamed, escaped.

Illinois Canal Inquiry Ends In Sign Fight

Chicago January 10 Disruption marked a legislative Investigating committee session over canal affairs with lawmakers split over signings of the Meese report. The minority report is expected to become the majority, calling for removal of Canal Commissioners Snively and Sackett and canceling leases with Economy Light and Power. The five-member group adjourned without signatures, signaling a likely joint effort by Democrats and Shurtleff Republicans to push the Meese draft.

Fire delays hindered by freight train at Rock Island crossing

Fire department No 1 faced a several minute wait responding to a 5 15 pm alarm when a long freight train blocked Jefferson Street crossing of the Rock Island railroad. No 3 arrived soon after and contained a roof blaze started by chimney sparks at a residence on Third Street and C Langdon. Damage described as small.

Promise Exposé of Spirits Cult Opens Ottawa Street Lectures

J Dwight Hagaman former Spiritualist and Anti-Medium Association president will lecture at Ottawa Street Methodist church on Monday night exposing Spiritualism. He plans a citywide crusade with topics including its origin philosophy and phenomena and questions whether friends after death join minister unions. He claims miracles like Little Bright Eyes are false.

Indictments in Wisconsin murder case and related charges

January grand jury returns fourteen indictments for twenty seven counts in Janesville. Harry Othavyer and Lawrence Crowley charged with malicious mischief for allegedly borrowing George H Munroe's auto for late night spins. Other cases include Bishop linked to a Belo murder, jewel theft, confidence games, larceny, embezzlement, and various assaults and burglaries across several defendants.

Last Rites For Henry Doug lass Snapp

Funeral services for Henry Doug lass Snapp were held at 2 oclock at the Allen F Cooper residence on First avenue with Rev J H Odgers officiating. A quartet sang three sacred songs and pallbearers included George A Ducker Guy M Learnard Charles E Wilson M H Luke A C Van Horn and E Thayer from Atlanta Ga. Interment followed at Oakwood cemetery.

Exam set for new applicants to fire and police

At a meeting of the Police and Fire Commissioners the decision was made to announce civil service examinations for both departments within two weeks. No eligibles on the fire list though a vacancy exists. Chief Langdon has asked for new hires. Police have two eligibles and no vacancies. exam timing to be fixed soon.

Peculiar Wreck On C. A. This Morning

An unusual wreck occurred on the Chicago and Alton line near the Jefferson street crossing about 10 o’clock. An extra northbound freight at 15 mph lost a brake beam, a car derailed for 150 yards tearing roadbed and ties, then rejoined rails after 100 yards on its own and 50 more to cross Rock Island tracks. The incident prompted quick repairs and the train was stopped with the car moved to a sidetrack.
