Seventy five dram shop license applications were presented and referred for report at tomorrow's adjourned meeting. Of the total 75, 48 were from Porter company, 14 from Anheuser Busch, 13 from Schlitz. Names of bondsmen and addresses appear for many applicants as the city weighs licensing revenue and protest risk.
Attorney General Hamlin opened a secret inquiry into rumored manipulation of the coal supply by railroads and operators. He fears witnesses will refuse to testify publicly and cannot yet say what recommendations he will make if a conspiracy is found.

Conductor J. D. Keen was wounded when three robbers attempted a New Orleans bound Louisville and Nashville train hold up. After a struggle in the smoking car he accidentally struck one robber, was shot, then seized a Winchester in the baggage car and killed the bandit. The other two fled.
In Quincy three Monon railroad workers were killed when a freight train derailed, engineer Barker and fireman In gallson, and brakeman Perry, all from Lafayette. Nine cars wrecked and livestock killed. In Marion an electric car derailed after hitting track obstruction, injuring thirty with two possibly fatal.
General Boduslawski’s violent denunciation of the Monroe doctrine is reported as a semi official German utterance. Officials say it confirms suspicions that Germany used the Venezuelan crisis to test the doctrine and signals possible trouble for U S policy.
In Duncan last night Thomas Stewart, a powerful bartender, assaulted Patrick Caul, a night clerk. Caul lies at his home in an unconscious condition with poor prospects of recovery, while Stewart was later arrested on an assault with intent to kill charge. Doctors later said Caul’s condition improved and he would likely recover.
The Union club becomes a chartered member of the American Whist League. Papers arrived yesterday and the news was announced at the regular whist meeting. The ladies team plays tomorrow. a discussion on club privileges for female relatives followed with a policy clarified to exclude married sisters or daughters unless their husbands are members. The whist committee plans a return engagement with Aurora City club teams mid January, with an exact date to be announced. Eighteen teams played last night in the straight average game.

In Delavan Illinois on December 30 Charles Talbot manager of the local telephone office shot and killed himself after trying to murder his wife who was wounded in the hand. Jealousy blamed for the tragedy. the couple had been married three months.
Madrid December 30 official confirmation that Angel Puigar, arrested at Oviedo on the 8th, has confessed intent to assassinate Alfonso. The confession ties him to an anarchist plot aiming at the Spanish ruler.
