London Ont December 27 The Grand Trunk wreck near Wanstead raises death toll to about forty as a special express and heavy freight collide at high speed. Passengers and trainmen killed instantly, many seriously injured. A heroic snowbound rescue and fire suppression followed amid zero weather.

Dodson Missouri December 27 a wreck on the Missouri Pacific near the town last night resulted in the death of E T Martin and injuries to eleven others Local reports say the collision occurred near the station and emergency crews responded promptly to the scene
Berlin dispatch reports Germany accepts The Hague tribunal as arbitrator in the Venezuelan dispute. The state department denies U S involvement in drafting a preliminary arbitration protocol. Roosevelt’s stance is cited as not acting as arbitrator in spirit or letter. Unclear if the blockade will continue during talks.
Geneva reports a tense scene as Princess Louise refuses to return to her father's palace insisting on her French tutor who accompanied her. Archduke Joseph lunged at the tutor, then Louise threw herself between them to shield her lover. Leopold Ferdinand later claimed happiness as a citizen.
A gang of expert robbers blew the vault at the Bank of Union last night securing 15000 dollars. They fired revolvers to terrorize residents while the deed was witnessed by several locals. The bandits fled on horseback after the heist.
In Wilkes Barre on December 27 the mine workforce rose to about 60 percent, but many breaker and driver boys remained away. Output for today is limited to roughly 40 percent of normal, with operators predicting no relief before after New Year.
