Mrs. Alice Clement Chaney 51 died at 12 45 this morning in Joliet after a year of illness. Her husband S D Chaney and two daughters Geneieve and Cordelia survive with one brother. Funeral Monday at 2 pm at her home with Rev H W Reed officiating, Oakwood cemetery interment. She organized the Chase Avenue Settlement house and helped found Silver Cross hospital. Her work with Cosmos club and Joliet Woman's Federation noted. Her death mourned citywide.
Orange Randolph Smith aged 67 dies at his home on 11 Richmond Street. He leaves his wife and five children C, Harry Randolph, Miss Jes Mills, Orange Randolph Jr, and Bessie May. Funeral Sunday afternoon at 23 o'clock at Oakwood Cemetery.
At a morning meeting the Michigan Central crossing at Davidson's crossing on East Washington street was debated whether to place a flagman or build a viaduct. J H Schneider argued the railroad faced high costs and low danger, noting only one accident in eighteen years. Commissioners favored a viaduct if the road bears excavation work. payroll of 296.50 was approved.
A man was approached by robbers early today who threatened him and stole $60 from a slot machine used as a bank. William Moran was named the latest victim in the spate of burglaries.
Burglars broke into William Moran's billiard hall on Jefferson Street and took $60 plus cigars, with Mrs Moran hiding yesterday's receipts in a slot machine. A separate inventory at Mrs Van Dyke's Whitney Avenue home shows silver plate and jewelry stolen. Detectives suspect two bandits tied to a week of crimes. several suspects were brought to police headquarters, cleared by alibi.
